PERRY MASON---Robert Downey, Jr. will star in the HBO/Nic Pizzolatto (TRUE DETECTIVE) tv series based on the Erle Stanley Gardner novels. The original tv series starring Raymond Burr ran on CBS from 1957-1966.

JACK RYAN---Amazon ordered ten episodes of the tv series starring John Krasisnski as Jack Ryan in his early days as a CIA analyst.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY---director James Gunn commented on if he would be interested in directing a DC Comics movie, "I’ve had opportunities to make DC films, but I haven’t said yes to anything, and not sure I would at this time. I’ve talked before about which projects appeal to me the most IF I was into making one, and it’s always Shazam and Metal Men and Swamp Thing and [Jonah] Hex and a few other DC IPs I’ve enjoyed for a great deal of my life."

DOCTOR STRANGE---a source said Robert Downey, Jr. will have a Tony Stark cameo in the movie.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS---Ben Whishaw (SKYFALL) is in talks to play the adult Michael Banks in the sequel movie.

ECSTASIA---Scott Eastwood and Matilda Lutz star in this sci fi movie about a couple in love in a society where love is not supposed to exist.

GENIUS---Geoffrey Rush will play Albert Einstein in this National Geographic Channel anthology series.

ARRIVAL - Yes... yes... that could be a GREAT film. Must see.

STAR WARS - Mads? I didn`t see Mads in there. I could be blind.

GENIUS - Mr. Rush`s participation makes me interested.

IT - Good design!

JACK RYAN - Alec Baldwin remains Jack Ryan to me. Indelible. I`d rather they crafted another character *like* Ryan, but not.

If Perry Mason was real and Robert Downey, Jr. knocked on his door, Perry would tell him, "Sorry, I'm going out of business," and shut and lock it.

Arrival looks good. Very Michael Crichton kind of vibe. And Amy Adams is always worth watching.

I was thinking 'Sphere' meets 'The Abyss', with flavours of 'Close Encounters' and 'Prometheus'. I have a feeling this is ground that has been covered by science fiction quite a lot before and I'm wondering what their angle on it will be, so I will be reserving judgement until I get a chance to see it. But I hope it turns out to be something special.

Arrival makes me think of Sphere, and this is not a compliment.

By the way, if anybody is interested, Kraft-Engel is reporting Marc Shaiman for the score (and songs) to the Poppinsquel.

Yeah, the film seems to be an amalgam of various other sci fi concepts -- THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, SPHERE, INDEPENDENCE DAY, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS etc.

I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. It all comes down to Villeneuve, and if he's able to put his stamp on the material. From the trailer, you can definitely see some of his trademarks -- the dusk/dark lighting, red/black elements and the music, which is very Johannsson-ian (but probably not composed by him).

I'll await another trailer before I get a better "grasp" of it, but I definitely think it looks promising.

SPHERE is a fantastic movie, one of the best sci fi movies of the 90s. I'll defend that film untill the day I die.

I think clarifications like that are necessary only when comments here about recent / current movies are compliments. Most comments made here about any movie from the last ~20 years are uncomplimentary by default.

I thought 'Sphere' was OK. Not great, but certainly interesting.

The universal mantra of movie goers with terrible cinematic taste, "screw metacritic"
