This film looks intriguing. I didn't click on the thread at first, because I confused it with the Desplat-scored (and according to my colleagues, really poor) movie THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS. But this is more up my alley. I'm sure Lockington delivers. He's been a bit hit and miss -- especially as far as the TV music is concerned -- but when he's on, he's really good.

The trailer for this movie is one of those that basically gives away the entire plot. I've seen the trailer twice in the theatre and I feel like I have already seen the film.

Performed by Lockington? What is this, an all-synth score?

Couldn't agree more. The trailer felt like one of those 30 second bunny movies on youtube. Directors must have zero say as to how their movies are promoted, because I can't believe any of them would create trailers like the ones we see over and over on TV and in the theatres.

Not all-synth, but an orchestra-synth hybrid. The "Biplane" cue is the highlight.

Lockington is a very nice guy, by the way. Spoke to him on the phone the other day for over an hour.

http://encyclotronic.com/articles/interviews/music-from-mars-andrew-lockington-on-making-sounds-for-the-space-between-us-r13/

"The piano and strings and horns are traditional instruments recorded at Air Studios in London. All of the salvaged instruments were recorded in advance, and in many cases are much more prevalent than you might realize at first listen. The strings in the orchestra are often double by bowed "found metals" which gives a glistening shimmer to the sound. The piano parts are all doubled by a "metallophon'esque" instrument we created which is why the piano timbre is so unique. "

Finally saw this today, and Lockington's score works wonderfully in the movie, particularly the ethereal space music. It's so much more than simply "Thomas Newman lite", both film and music being superior to Passengers in my opinion.

I don't get the negative reviews the film seems to have gotten. Whilst it may be missing a bit of believability in some aspects, it really is more of a throw back to the way films were made in the 80's, and Starman, DARYL, and Flight of the Navigator very much come to mind. See it if you get a chance.

My review of the album (I sadly didn't notice those interesting-sounding instruments at all)

The film probably has one to many "WTF" moments, but I like Britt Robertson. She's sassy.

I totally agree. Nice "synth" sounding score that really added atmosphere and was a driving force in the film. Kinda reminds me of "Children of a Lessor God". Here's an example where an understated score can work. The music flourishes during the crop duster sequence though. (Not sure how the music would play outside of the visuals)

I also agree with you regarding the style of the film. Felt like an 80's romance, sci fi, drama flic. Much of the science is "bogus", but I can let it slide for a film like this. I really enjoyed it. Fine cast, some great performances, clever visuals, a few clever gags, and some unexpected plot twists. Only had a few minor issues with it. I found the very ending rather sloppy and not as rewarding as it could have been. This kind of story could've been real cringe worthy, instead I found the directional flow engaging.

Of course it bombed and was skewered by "critics", it had ideas that stirred the imagination.

"Whats your favorite thing about Earth?" wink
