Terrific movie. Love Sam Neil in everything and Nicole Kidman is half decent in this too.

Heck, even Billy Zane is good in it!

Plus it's one of the few Hollywood movies in recent history where the dog buys the farm. As someone who absolutely hates all dogs - and even thinks he Chinese have the right idea by eating them - this pleases me greatly. Other films could benefit by such treatment of canines (I'm the guy who cheers in Jaws when Bruce eats Pippett!!).

Also I have to say That although I don't find Kidman especially sexy, the scene with her naked arse is pretty hot.

I love this film dearly, and put it almost on the same level as the original Polanski film it was remade from (KNIFE IN THE WATER). And Graeme Revell's score is one of his very best. Love those "panting" effects. I know that for Tobias, it was the score that made him interested in soundtracks to begin with.

Odd, i was thinking of this film just yesterday out of the blue for the first time in years. Haven't seen it in maybe 15 years but remember liking it. I thought it was well cast. i already liked Sam Neill at the time but thought Kidman and Zane were great too. I think i remember it so well as when it was released i was collecting comics and the ad was on the back of all my comics for a while.

DEAD CALM is based on Charles Williams' 1963 novel "Dead Calm", not on Polanski's KNIFE IN THE WATER, despite superficial similarities.

Okey, okey, but I would be surprised if Noyce didn't at least consult the Polanski film when he did DEAD CALM. There are so many similarities that are not only superficial.

Thanks Thor, mentioning me in a thread like this almost made me feel like a celebrity.

Similarities do not a remake make. I'm just surprised that you've never noticed that they're not the same story despite those "similarities".

I'm not the only one to consider DEAD CALM a -- basically -- remake of KNIFE IN THE WATER.

Then you must have loved A Fish Called Wanda!
