Did you by any chance count the number of times THE BOOM MIC WAS VISIBLE IN THE SHOT? I remember seeing it a LOT of times!

Were you watching an improper version (such as "full frame" cropped for TV) or one with the 1.85:1 framing?

I actually saw it at the theatre when it came out!

Seeing a film in a theater is no guarantee that it is being projected properly. If the projectionist was not using the right plate in the film gate it might have been projected in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio even though it was designed to be shown cropped to 1.85:1. I showed Audrey Rose back when I ran projectors in the local theater in high school and I don't remember seeing any boom microphones in the shot. We probably used the 1.85 plate.

What I find interesting is that the poster art and the film say, "Filmed In Panavision". Shouldn't that mean aspect ratio as 2.35:1?

Panavision did not always mean 2.35:1 but was only an indication that Panavision lenses were used. There were a number of films at 1.85:1 that included the "Filmed in Panavision" reference. I remember assuming for years that Robert Altman's A Perfect Couple was shot in 'scope (especially since Altman shot many of his films in widescreen at that time) and couldn't understand why there were no 16mm scope prints available when I ran a college film program, but finally discovered it was a shot at 1.85:1..
