Artists or groups you have never seen in concert, but would love to.

Which ones? Active or retired ones.

I never got to see Tangerine Dream. They never played in my area during the 70's/80's/90's. Finally, TD played the Moog Festival here in NC a few years ago, and I was all set to pay an overpriced ticket just to catch their show only. But as luck would have it, my plans fell through, and of course, now Froese has passed on.

I never got to see Supertramp live, although I thankfully DID see Roger Hodgson when he played at Norwegian Wood some years ago. He wrote more than half of the Supertramp songs anyway. Now it's unlikely I'll ever see them live, as Rick Davies has seemed to retire completely after their 40th anniversary tour in 2010.

I also never saw Pink Floyd with Waters and Gilmour both in place. I saw them live for the DIVISION BELL tour in 1994, but that was without Waters. And then I saw Waters solo in Stavanger some 8-9 years ago. So combined, I guess I've seen them, but that doesn't really count.

I'd really love to see Alan Parsons live at some point, but he seems to avoid Northern Europe completely, much less Norway. And now that Eric Woolfson -- the main songwriter -- is dead, it's impossible to see the original line-up.

Finally, I would have loved to see Oingo Boingo live, but they disbanded in 1995, just as I was discovering them. And I don't think they ever played outside the US anyway (heck, hardly even outside LA).

Other favourites I've never seen live -- but would have loved to -- include Beach Boys, Jethro Tull, 10CC, Electric Light Orchestra, Vangelis, Paul Oakenfold, Juno Reactor, Tangerine Dream. Just to mention some.

Every artist on my "wish to see live" list is now an impossibility:

The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Eagles
Nirvana
David Bowie

Oh well. However, I *was* lucky enough to see Stevie Ray Vaughn back in the eighties....

However, I *was* lucky enough to see Stevie Ray Vaughn back in the eighties....

Around 1978, when I was living in Austin, Texas, I was leaving from a neighborhood bar one night when I heard amazing music coming from the dumpy Italian restaurant & bar across the street - the Rome Inn it was called. I walked over to see what was happening and for a cover charge of two or three bucks I got in to see Stevie Ray Vaughan and his band with vocalist Miss Lou Ann Barton performing for a crowd of about ten people. Despite the paltry turnout they didn't hold back one iota and it was one of the greatest live music experiences I've ever had. In Austin in the seventies there was great music to be found every night of the week.

Anyway, here's my list of regrets:

  • Miles Davis
  • John Coltrane (actually, he was dead before I was quite old enough to be going to concerts)
  • Duke Ellington
  • Thelonious Monk
  • Marvin Gaye
  • Little Richard
  • Alfred Brendel
  • Sviatoslav Richter

    Not sure it counts but...

My greatest disappointment is never having seen Michael Crawford perform as The Phantom.

I've seen Phantom of the Opera a number of times and while the leads have been good, to me, Michael has always been The Phantom and I wish that I had seen him perform.

Even more disappointing was the choice of casting Gerard Butler instead of Michael in the risible Phantom movie. If only Michael had been cast in that role....

    Howlin' Wolf.

    Frank Sinatra.

    Elvis Presley.

    The Beatles.

    Orson Welles.

I wish I'd seen Carol Lawrence in the original WEST SIDE STORY, Julie Andrews and Richard Burton in the original CAMELOT, and OKLAHOMA!

    Miles Davis
    Frank Sinatra
    The Beatles
    The Doors
    Elvis Presley
    Otis Redding
    Marvin Gaye
    T-Rex
    Kate Bush
    Jaco Pastorius
    Stanley Clarke
    Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin ( though I have seen Plant & Page )
    Prince

I can't complain too much, I've seen a huge amount of great live music by great artists over the decades.

Yeah, I didn't mention people like Elvis, since that is kinda taken for granted. He was one of my biggest musical heroes as a kid and even teenager, and it would have been great to see all the 'hooplah' surrounding him. But alas, he died a few months before I was born. Same with The Beatles, obviously. Mostly for the mayhem.

And I should have mentioned other obvious picks like Sinatra and Elvis. Great choices. Sammy Davis Jr. also comes to mind. Any one of them would have been a pleasure to see at least once. Always admired all of them. But again, now an impossibility. frown

Of the artists who were living and still performing while I was of an age to see and appreciate them?

    Mel Tormé

I even worked at a record store and had access to the Ticketmaster machine to buy my own tickets when Tormé was in town in 1995 or '96. I didn't buy the tickets (nosebleed seats) but Tormé had a stroke not long after that show so any chance at seeing him were dashed. frown

I never did see Sparks live, they're doing some great stuff today, but it's the seventies Sparks I should have seen.

So er...why doesn't the thread originator list his?

Don't fret, they still do the 70s stuff so there's a chance yet. I saw them a few years ago on the "Two hands, one mouth" tour and it was brilliant.

My regrets include of course a Shostakovich concert at which he was present but I was just discovering him when he died. I have seen a concert of his music involving his son Maxim and his great friend Rostropovich, which is as close as was possible.

Still possible but unlikely are Gordon Lightfoot, Kate Bush and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

Ha, got you there. I went to the Festival Hall on the South Bank to see/hear the English premier of the 15th symphony conducted by his son, & the great man was there, but I never saw him. I did buy the LP conducted by Maxim Shostakovich on the HMV/Melodiya label, but to this day that bloody recording has never appeared in CD.

Even being at the same venue makes me envious.

Like you, I have seen Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. Didn't really bother me that Waters wasn't there in 94.

Also, Parsons, Vangelis, Oakenfold, Juno and TD - yes thanks!

Must have been great to be in Rotterdam in 1991 when Vangelis played one of his very few concerts.

Jethro Tull even played in Kristiansand some years ago.

    Stanley Clarke

If he would play the main theme from Passenger 57.
