To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Lucky Luke comics, Music Box Records, Dargaud and Caïd Music proudly present the expanded and remastered soundtracks from the Lucky Luke animated films composed and conducted by Claude Bolling in a 3-CD box set: Daisy Town (1971), La Ballade des Dalton (The Ballad of the Daltons, 1978) and 1990's French television series (Lucky Luke, season 2).

Lucky Luke is a Belgian comics series created by Belgian cartoonist Morris, and for one period written by René Goscinny. Set in the American Old West, it stars the title character Lucky Luke, the singing cowboy on a white horse known as the "man who shoots faster than his shadow", largely inspired by westerns, American cartoons and Herge´’s Tintin. Morris drew no less than seventy albums of the adventures of Lucky Luke, 300 million books have been sold and the stories of the lone cowboy have been translated into 29 languages. It is one of the most popular and best-selling comic-book series in continental Europe.

Goscinny, the creator of Astérix, directed and co-produced the French-Belgian animated Lucky Luke films. Goscinny and Morris engaged the services of Pierre Tchernia (French cinema and television producer, screenwriter), whom Goscinny had known since 1965 and with whom he shared a great interest in the world of Walt Disney. In 1990, a new series of 26 episodes is produced with the collaboration of Morris.

This present edition showcases Claude Bolling's creative versatility for the two feature-length cartoons and the TV series. The three lively scores offer a wide array of musical styles and genres: western film music, Hollywood musicals, blue grass, tijuana music, jazz music in the Count Basie big band style, some iconic songs such as the famous ‘’I’m a Poor Lonesome Cowboy’’. This special 3-CD release features the expanded scores to Daisy Town and The Ballad of the Daltons, as well as that, never before released, from the 1990 television series, all carefully remastered from the composer’s original master tapes.

Just listened to all the sound clips and would describe these scores as totally exhilarating. The TV series introduces new material including a virtuoso banjo main theme and a lot of other goodies. A major release.
Also congratulations to MBR for releasing in March as well their first album dedicated to Paul Misraki. If you're not familiar with it, pay a listen to the sound clips and you will soon find out that the main theme song is addictive: you just need to hear it only once and then keep it in mind for the rest of the day! Well done.

I read the comic books quite often as a kid, but I only remember seeing a glimpse or two of the animated films and tv shows. In any case, my connection to the comic makes me curious about this. Looks like a very cool release!

This set was an impulse buy for me as I vaguely recalled the comic as a young French student years ago and the clips sounded great. Man, what a wonderful release! I can't stop playing the set, particularly the first disc. I've had the tunes stuck in my head for days. It's a great animated score and a great western score.

This is my first exposure to Claude Bolling. Anyone got any recommendations?

Fabulous release! Thanks, Music Box!

Chris

A question for Music Box. When you looked into releasing this, did you consider including Shuki Levy's score to the 1980s animated series of Lucky Luke?

Our decision was to release only the music composed by Claude Bolling for the Lucky Luke animated films and TV series (season 2).

OK, thanks. If you did decide to release Shuki Levy's music from the 1983 cartoon, I would certainly buy it. Alas, Shuki Levy releases are virtually non-existent these days!

Well its not film music but this is the seminal work that put Bolling on the map:

Yes, I would also highly recommend these cross over recordings achieved by Bolling with great musicians such as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Maurice André, Alexandre Lagoya, etc. They are synonymous with a pleasant listening throughout. In the 60's, he also recorded the album JAZZGANG AMADEUS MOZART which is a real treat.

All the Lucky Luke comics that were texted by René Goscinny were marvelous. I love Lucky Luke, though I found it annoying when he quit smoking in the 1980s. He replaced that cigarette with a blade of gras, which is rather silly. (At least they spoofed it now and then when he absentmindedly tried to light it up.)
I guess they did that so kids would not pick up smoking, though I seriously doubt kids want to smoke because a cartoon cowboy smokes. But it was always funny that this picture perfect hero cowboy was so completely addicted to cigarettes (in most pictures he would either smoke or roll a cigarette... he was practically a chain smoker).
No movie version of Lucky Luke ever managed to capture the charm or the humor of the comics, unfortunately.
Nevertheless, this looks like an interesting set, one I must have overlooked.

I've been waiting for a reissue, as the original one has become very rare and expensive. Happy for this re-issue, I will order one soon - going to wait for it to show up at some North American retailers.

I knew this looked familiar. Outside of the word 'reissue' there's zero indication they released this before....
