Wow I didn't know Soldier in the Rain at all but I LOVE that theme. Would be very interested in a score release if tapes survive -- thanks for sharing! And of course I've long wanted a release of both the complete Mancini and Goodwin recordings for Frenzy. Oh, and A Shot in the Dark if tapes can be found! (Hell, I'll take it from stems or whatever; I'm still grateful to LLL for releasing Seconds by Goldsmith, despite the sources.) Yavar

Mancini received an Oscar nom for Pink Panther; the RCA album is mostly if not all source cues. I haven't seen the film since it played in theaters. Are any of you fans familiar with his actual score? If so, did it deserve a nomination? I'd like a score album for Pink Panther--and Arabesque--to go with Charade, Breakfast At Tiffany's, and Hatari.

The Pink Panther has at least 12 minutes of score in the first 15 minutes of the film (including the titles) and it’s all pretty terrific. I think the rest leans more on the album tunes with a short score segment here and there. Worth a Oscar? For what it is, why not? Definitely worth a proper cd, along with Shot in the Dark, Experiment in terror, Arabesque, and the original scores from Peter Gunn (while we’re dreaming)

Glad you love it, Yavar, it's absolutely one of my favorite Mancini themes. My gosh, I forgot to include another one of my favorite versions of the "friendship" theme, by Andre Previn: Interestingly, the film was directed by Ralph Nelson, made right after "Lilies of the Field" and followed by "Fate is the Hunter." Curious if Goldsmith was the first composer asked to score "Soldier in the Rain." Slightly OT, but thanks for posting that Previn album. I looked up the cuts and found that #1, A Million Bucks, is the theme from "Checkers," for which I believe John Williams received his first Grammy nomination. A very catchy theme, and fortunately the album is on iTunes. -

It’s been great that our favourite labels have “righted the wrong” of Mancini’s pop albums. He was a superb dramatist and it’s a shame he never lived to see his more dramatic underscore be preserved on CD. Even scores like Tiffany’s had some incredible dramatic passages that were overshadowed by the jazz/pop arrangements on the LP. Chris

I'd love it if his Condorman score would get a repressing from Intrada. I second this. The used market prices are ridiculous.
