"The Force Awakens" score just refuses to stop growing on me. It's a masterful score. Rey's theme and the March of the Resistance are so infectious. And the opening track is second-best Main Title after Imperial Attack on the New Hope soundtrack. I can't wait to see (hear) where he'll take it in Episode VIII if/when he signs on.

I totally agree! It's a fantastic score.....best played loud when it's just you in the house! Absolutely epic!
Yeah, I'm eagerly awaiting and hoping for Williams' to score the next two segments. If he can apply the same inspiration and heart that he did to Ep. VII it will be an incredible finale to his career. It's funny, I think I fell in love with the character of Rey as much from Williams' wonderful theme for her as from Daisy Ridley's performance--I can't remember the last time we got such a wonderful introduction to a character out of a combination of music and imagery.
I'm not sure how much choice Rian Johnson has in this situation, but I highly doubt he would turn down the opportunity to work with Williams on a Star Wars movie. No doubt Kennedy is main force behind keeping Williams involved... aside from Williams own interest, of course.
Finally got round to getting this cd and im liking it so far.The film itself was absolutley HORRIBLE.Just a complete rehash of ANH so thats maybe i held off in getting the score until now.
Didn't Kathleen Kennedy announce he would do the whole trilogy a few years ago?
Yep..Kathy already said this.
Even Before JJ was on board...Kathy said John Williams would score the movies.
Of course he will, if he can.
That said, Kathleen Kennedy is a very powerful producer, but she is not so powerful that she can alter the rotation of the earth or stop time. Time takes its toll on all of us, and in 2019, John Williams will be 87 years old. By all appearances, he is spry and as articulate as ever. I consider every new John Williams score to be a gift (which doesn't mean I like them all equally). Let's hope he's at the podium (or at least watching) for that final end credit roll for Episode IX.
He should be done scoring The BFG in March or April of this year and then he will begin writing his basic themes for Episode 8 in the next few months after. The 1st full cut of VIII should be done by August or September of this year which would mean the scoring sessions will probably be late this year in Nov/Dec or very early January of '17.
I think Episode IX is tentative for a May '19 release, so Williams would probably be scoring that movie around Christmas '18. I think John's got a few more good scores left in him.

Don't forget that Spielberg is currently in pre-production of READY PLAYER ONE, which Williams will presumably be scoring after THE BFG. This might be an issue in relation to SW8, unless SW8 comes first, post-production-wise.
I sincerely hope he will be able to do more SW films, but I hope even more that he'll be able to do the proposed INDIANA JONES 5, and that it will be a more inspired one, as the last one was not a major success to go out on.

I share the same sentiment. With the passage of time, Williams may probably share the conducting chores with other conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel and Williams Ross. To me it seems that he was already preparing these conductors when he brought them to the Force Awakens sessions. So they may naturally fill him in if the need occurs. All through I hope he is as fit and ready to lead the orchestra himself all through the new trilogy.
That said, Williams sound-style from Empire did change during the 90's AND I actually believe that such change is taking place right now, his sound is not like it was in the 90's
