I'm not sure if a thread like this has been done, even if so, I think it'd be cool to do an updated one. So basically, how did you come across this board? Was there a specific score you were looking for and you stumbled upon the forum? Or for those who were around before the internet era, how did you find out about film score monthly?

I know for me, my love for soundtracks started when I was a little kid. I would hum the Back to the Future theme song, Indiana Jones, James Bond, etc a lot. Coming out of High School I started collecting all of the Bond soundtracks, most of which Lukas had re-issued/expanded that were available at Barnes and Noble. I was talking to an online friend about film score music and my love for soundtracks, wishing there were websites solely dedicated to film music. He laughed and linked me to Screen Archives Entertainment and this forum. Then I stumbled upon La La Land Records, Intrada, and all the others, this had to be about real late 2008. Since then I've seen a lot of my all time most wanted scores see the light of day.

I first saw an issue at Intrada (when they had their storefront in SF), and eventually became a subscriber when it looked like they would be around for awhile, and eventually wrote for them during their 'zine' phase.

In the early 2000s I joined the forum at soundtrackcollector.com where I eventually read comments about how ruthless and barbaric the FSM forum was, so I thought "Hey, sounds like fun." The rest is history.

That letter published by Lukas Kendall in the Starlog magazine got the ball rolling. I was there when it all happened. The rest is history.....

Same here, although I didn't respond until two years after that letter was published.

I'm thinking it was 84 Dean Street Records in the mid-90s...

In Cinémisuqe shop, Paris. The first one I bought was the one with Darth Vader in ESB on the cover, as the Star Wars Arista box was just released then!

We've done a couple of similar threads in the past. Like this:

My FSM "story" is right there in the first post.

In regard to the magazine, I first discovered it listed at a 'publications' link at filmmusic.com, ca. 1996. I wrote Lukas a letter with dollar bills attached, requesting a subscription. My first issue was the "Taking of Pelham" one which was also the launch of their record label. Later, I acquired all the issues prior to that, from 1990 onwards.

I'm not sure, I think I may have read about it in Soundtrack Magazine around 1993.

84 Dean Street was a Soho adult bookstore with peepshow. I don't recall seeing any soundtrack magazines on their shelves. There was a magazine called "For Sex Maniacs" that some might have referred to as FSM – perhaps that's the one you are thinking of?
I think I saw some copies of FSM (the soundtrack magazine) at 58 Dean Street though.

A friend of mine who was a John Williams completist, lent me the June 1999 issue. A whole film score world (including this board, with Jerry Goldsmith as its Supreme Ruler) was opened up to me. I would buy occasional issues at Borders and Barnes & Noble until I subscribed for the last three or so years of the late and lamented magazine's run.

I think it was 1997. I'd never had a home computer and was in the computer room at university. I looked up basically 3 things; stuff to do with my art/creative writing course, anything on the film THE THING, and anything on film music, which i liked and no else i knew did. And that's how i came across this site, it was one of the first things that popped up, i guess.

I read it for maybe 8 years, especially after i got a home PC. Then in about 2005 i had a serious facial injury that meant i was off work for a month and in my boredom I'd start posting here as Oblicno. Through it i've enjoyed many a great correspondence with several top people, met Tall Guy on several occasions (always a joy for him) and Warlok, too, so it's not all been bad wink.

Browsing at the public library early-mid 90s came across Fred Karlin's Listening to Movies. He mentioned the fledgling FSM coming out of some college kid's dorm. So I wrote the college kid. 'Twas the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I found FSM through discussions on the old MovieMusic.com message boards.

I must point out that I am a big fan of Thor's archival activities; it's always interesting, the threads he resurrects.

I was always into soundtracks from a young age. Started collecting around 89, 90. I actually shoplifted my first issue of FSM. I think it was the Escape from LA one. I remember thinking it looked so cheap, like a photocopied school project, I just refused to pay for it!

From there I discovered SAE and then eventually the FSM board around 2003 I think.

Picked up Fred Karlin's marvelous book Listening To Movies in mid-1994 (started collecting soundtracks in early '92), and in the index there was a handy listing of various soundtrack magazines, including FSM. Sent off a $16 check (I think that's what it cost) for a year's subscription, and not too long after, I got my first issue in the mail (#50, with Alan Silvestri on the cover). Haven't looked back since. big grin
