For those of us who still love old film musicals, please note that Warner Archive will be releasing a Blu-ray of Stanley Donen's DEEP IN MY HEART on November 10.

A delightfully schmaltzy concoction about the presumed life of composer Sigmund Romberg, this film is loaded with musical numbers featuring many MGM guest stars, Charisse, Kelly-Gene and Fred, Miller, Powell, Damone, Keel, Martin and more.

The orchestrations, primarily by Hugo Friedhofer with Alexander Courage are gorgeous (and particularly well-represented in the stereo soundtrack), and the "One Alone" sequence from "The Desert Song" with Cyd Charisse and James Mitchell is justly famous---and erotic.

This is not an angst-ridden biographical exercise on film, rather, just fun and games and sheer exuberance for those fans of the old-style musical form.

Many, many years ago, somewhere in the 1946-48 period, when his Broadway career was fading, Romberg went on a concert tour of the US, conducting a full orchestra in performances of his music for fans, before his death in the early 1950s. Mention of this tour is made in DEEP IN MY HEART and, coincidentally I recall attending one of these concerts with my family when I was very young.
So, I have a connective link with this film and always enjoy it whenever I watch.

DEEP IN MY HEART has not been well-served on CD. The original 12-track MGM soundtrack LP made it onto CD around 1986 via MCA, who combined it with WORDS AND MUSIC. That CD was not widely distributed. Still, used copies are available at a reasonable price. Sony issued an expanded 19-track version in 1991, but that release came from the mixed film tracks. Neither Rhino nor FSM saw fit to issue the complete score on CD while they were in the midst of their MGM releases.

In 2006, I purchased a 24-track MP3 download of the score, but that ended up on my computer as 24 files without track names, and in random order. At least it has the advantage of being in stereo, as is the film on video, ever since the days of laserdiscs. The download seems to no longer be available from Amazon (where I purchased it), but may still be available elsewhere. It would be nice for someone to put the complete score on CD, but none of the labels seem to be in that segment of the market any more.

that is good news, manderly -- it will definitely look great in HD - my fave number is the Powell /Damone duet "Will you remember?" from MAYTIME.

According to a previous Lukas FSM post, FSM was preparing this for release as a 2 CD set. However, the FSM/Turner connection was winding down and time ran out. Too bad.

DIMH is an overlooked gem. The Desert Song dance number is for me a highlight which demonstrates that MGM had no peer in film musical production. The dancing, the orchestration and the astounding set and lighting take your breath away.
