Despite my typical conservative approach to new editions of Windows I upgraded my laptop relatively quickly when I was able and just today (Aug 8) upgraded my desktop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I had until the big XP scare (that it wasn't going to be supported anymore) ran XP on this same machine. Interesting how quickly things can progress.

Though I had what appears to have been a minor issue with the display drivers working properly at first everything has been smooth and relatively painless. They have done a great job of getting the upgrade to work without messing up your settings. I never tried an upgrade of previous versions but this one seems especially painless.

If anyone else has bitten the bullet and gone to upgrade I'm interested. Also if anyone has a big reason why they absolutely never want to bother with it. Share away!

I have. At first it caused a shut down issue on my PC but that seems to have resolved itself.

New interface seems ok but I'll let you know when I've evaluated it more.

I have as well, upgraded from 8.1. Seemed to take ages for it to install, but it's been okay so far. Does appear initially to be an improvement. What's this Microsoft Edge about?

I haven't, nor will I unless Microsoft forces me to. I have that annoying window icon in the taskbar that won't go away, reminding me to update. Wish there was some way to remove it.

There are a few ways Thor:

Upgraded last night. Took 2 hours, yikes.

But so far, it is running fine and is much much better than the horrid Windows 8.

Getting used to it, but for now, yeah I think it is a good move.

Upgraded, and rolled back within the first week. Long story short, I don't think its quite ready for my everyday use just yet. Some application incompatibilities here (contrary to what the compatibility report had told me prior to upgrade), lots of application freezes and crashes there. dodgy privacy invading features, bleach white file explorer, new flat and cold icon designs (somebody at MS has serious issues with color), confusing duality of control panel/settings apps, incomplete features all around, lots of huge and mandatory patch files every now and then (a nightmare for those on metered connections) with no option to postpone or cancel, etc, etc... I think I stay clear of this until they iron things out and tie up loose ends. Will check back again next July, just before the free upgrade offer expires.

Mine took about an hour to upgrade. Job done.

Microsoft "forced" me onto Windows 8.1, and happy with it now.
Everything works so well that will not upgrade unless forced to.

I will wait for the W10 problems with FSX and Prepar3d to be ironed out before I upgrade, though I almost certainly will at some point.

I'm a big fan of Win 7 and am unaware of anything that 8 or 10 offers that I need. When I was issued 8 at work a couple years ago I immediately had it changed to 7 to maintain the 'look & feel' , control and compatibility I knew and could count on.

That being said, I'm sure I will end up in a post-7 world sooner or later ... though I have considered buying (while I still can) an extra Win 7 laptop to have one in reserve.

Best of luck with 10. Hopefully it will gain an excellent reputation and bring some of us holdouts into the future. wink

Edge is just the new attempt at modernizing Internet Explorer. The hope is that by changing the name it will lose some of the initial problems people have with Internet Explorer. Though for me the lack of extension support is enough for me to ignore it because I use Laspass and not being able to use Lastpass and/or Pushbullet extensions on an alternative browser is very problematic for me. Would be nice to be able to replace chrome but for now that is where I am set.

What sorts of applications did you have issues with compatibility and crashes? I think the privacy issues are a separate thing that some people have problems with that don't bother me.

Windows 7 works great for me so I'm in nu hurry to update. Might do so once they got the bugs ironed out and only if I hear from a LOT of sources that it's a worthy follow-up to Windows 7 and unlike Windows 8 doesnt think my Desktop PC is a tablet and need touch screen functionality.

Specialized apps for work. None of them seem to be ready for 10 just yet. Like for example, I have a data visualization and modelling tool which kept crashing every time I'd open a project. Another app required a device driver but Win10 wouldn't accept the vendor supplied driver and instead kept installing something of its own from Windows Update. The app would crash on launch with this driver. etc, etc

Touch screen stuff is completely optional. You wouldn't even know the option was there on most laptops or desktops. I'm glad even though my laptop also has a touch screen because things liked to dumb down settings for touch screens. It pretty much works like a combination of the best from Windows 7 and Windows 8. Apps are now treated like programs so they don't drive me nuts like they used to in 8.1. Who knows how long they will keep supporting Windows 7 but I think the upgrade process is pretty painless as long as you don't use any crazy specialized software.

Well I have officially started the roll back process (using a program called Macrium Reflect) to restore my computer to Windows 7. Windows 10 works great on my laptop but it doesn't work so well on my desktop computer due to some problems with my video card. I will see once I complete the restore if the problems with my video card were limited to Windows 10 or are indicating that I need to replace my video card completely. My whole motherboard and setup is full of such old products that if I had to replace one I might as well buy a whole new desktop computer setup.

I'm most interested in the privacy issues. What are they?
Windows 8 already had this inexcusable rubbish that I had to enter nearly all but my birth certificate just to get Skype started. I won't stand for that.

This is just one of many articles out there explaining the privacy issues. Though most tend to focus on the same things.

I hated to give up XP but I'm now acclimated to Windows 7. And I have no plans on changing. I still have to use a virtual XP to run Word Perfect 6.1.
