https://www.varesesarabande.com/collections/all/products/outbreak-the-deluxe-edition This release definitely deserves a thread of its own; Received it today and blown away by the new presentation. The new cues are stunning and the mix overall is so detailed and definitely packs more punch than the old album. I remember when I got the old album (via an order at colosseum in germany), it was my first mail order and alongside it were Poltergeist II (before deluxe), Dark Half and Running Man. Out of those, Outbreak was easily the one missing the most vital cues, but it was still amazing to get to hear at least some of those cues. Just like JNH's score for the Fugitive, and perhaps more accessible, Outbreak is a nice blend of orchestral power (brass, strings) combined with pulsating synths and drum kits. There is the love theme for Hoffman and Russo which is nice and gets reprised throughout the score, but what's also cool is the music (under)scoring the virus; Howard also had similar motifs for Kimble's detective work in The Fugitive, but here the material is much more ominous and life threatening. For me some of the standout epic cues that were missing in action: "Trying to Escape", "Robbie's symptoms", "Cops Arrive / McClintock Takes Off", "Monkey Lives" Some nice surprises include more of the Motaba River material, a longer "Final Authorization" as well as the end titles suite and its alternate send off. Two minor criticisms that prevent this expansion from being a five star release; the fade at the start of the "main titles" which on the previous album started off better on its own. Second, the decision to include the film version of "A Little Resistance" in the complete score program, which doesn't work as well as the alternate album one that is in the bonus section. The film version has added bars and changes to accommodate post editing changes and for me the flow is off. This is a case where I think the album one works better but a personal preference perhaps. But all in all I never expected to get so much joy out of 101 minutes (!) of music, this is a stunning release!

For those who have the new version can you confirm if the alternate finding the ship is here or been left off?

Newbie here (first post). I too am very excited and can't wait to receive this in the post. I'm not sure how I've missed this film growing up but I watched it for the first time at the weekend and really enjoyed it as a good old 90's action/thriller. Whilst watching the score really came through in the African scenes of the film for me but I was blown away by the end credits music. So enjoyable to listen to and really one of the highlights of JNH's scores that I have heard. I can't wait to receive the CD to go through it all in detail and add this to my collection.

For those who have the new version can you confirm if the alternate finding the ship is here or been left off? That track from the incomplete unmentionable is on the deluxe; first track from disc 2 "Robbie's Symptons" that plays before "finding the ship". It also has a longer intro. Good news. Odd that they have the two versions of finding the ship together though.

Thanks Francis for finally starting a separate thread for this awesome, totally totally rad Deluxe Outbreak release. I love Goldsmith's music but this James Newton Howard release is by leaps and bounds the one that I'm most excited about. I'm extremely surprised there isn't more talk about it. I'm glad to see some posts in the thread here and I think if more people listened to it (or once it arrives to them and they've had a chance) they will be blown away by how incredible this complete score is. I love Howard's music and Outbreak is one of his finest; the original CD did not do it justice. I'll take this opportunity to stress severely, once again, that the Outbreak expansion is something that needs to happen to Dreamcatcher -- a very fine JNH release on its own, a 40-minute Varese release from back in the day, although a decade after Outbreak. However, if a Deluxe Dreamcatcher were ever to be released, man-o-man people would be really impressed at how cool that score is once they've had a chance to hear it in its full glory, there is so much amazing and wicked stuff left off the original CD (a disc that I don't think many people gave a chance to begin with). Anyway, this release is so solid, thanks so much Varese, and please, please, please keep these James Newton Howard expansions coming, particularly with A Perfect Murder and Dreamcatcher! Yes, that would be lovely.

For what it's worth there's an error I just noticed in the samples. "A Little Resistance/Helicopter Chase" (disc 2, track 7) links to "Robbie's Cured/End Credits" (disc 2, track 11).
