i don't care whether or not it's orchestral, its more talent and a distinctive voice i want I completely agree with that. My issue is not that current composers can't step up to the plate, it's that distinctiveness is generally stomped out of film music along the process. Films are factory-constructed to look a certain way, have a certain pace, and sound a certain way. Which is why composers like Shaiman, Goldenthal, and to some extent Horner before his death have sat out for the last several years. And yes, Thor, I'm talking about mainstream American films here (not just blockbusters, though). And you're right, of course, interesting things can and do go on outside of this. But the original question was who "could lead Hollywood," and on this to-some-extent mainstream American message board, mainstream American films and their scores get the lion's share of discussion.
