I couldn`t be more excited. Return to Oz always has been one of my all time favorite scores. I had no idea that the old Bay Cities CD mix ommitted several instruments. To have the music properly mixed is probably more important to me than the additional music because I always thought that the old soundtrack was a great listening experience. Although I don`t mind finally having the complete score. The old Bay Cities "mix" is the one that appeared on the original Sonic Atmospheres LP. Omitted several instruments? Says who? Mr. Shire was directly involved in that LP release and I doubt he would have allowed it if things were missing. And exactly how, with the London Symphony and all, could things be missing? I'm baffled by this and will await some clarity. EDIT: Oh, I just read the other thread. If "sweeteners" were left off, then they were left off with Mr. Shire's approval and/or desires. He's not one to shut up about these things. So, forgive me if I don't take that very seriously. They may have done the sweeteners as a precaution for the film mix, but, you know, the timpani, harp and triangle are instruments that would be playing with the rest of the symphony orchestra. I`m sorry that I`m excited about the new release. Won`t happen again. Where in my post do you see anything criticizing your being excited about this release? I'm excited to hear the extra music, whatever it might be. You made a statement based on a hyperbolic press release about what you called missing instruments. There are no missing instruments. The "missing instruments" of your post turns out to be "sweeteners" which were obviously left off the original LP release because Mr. Shire and his engineer didn't think they were necessary for an album mix. What they do sometimes for FILM mix purposes is record a percussion overdub or harp overdub so you can have that clarity in the FILM mix. Those instruments are all there in the original mix, done with Mr. Shire's participation. I thought Mr. Shire and his engineer's work on the original album was superb-sounding straight down the line. I mean, I don't know, call me crazy but Eric Tomlinson is as good as it gets - he's the guy, you know, who did the original recording and mix. So, when you make a comment like "properly mixed" I just kind of scratch my elderly head. "Fascinating differences between two versions abound: Initially presented in 1985 from Eric Tomlinson's live two-track session mixes plus select remixes, Shire originally chose 12 tracks, assembled them into beautiful, creative album. However, those mixes did not always contain variety of additional colors (tympani, xylophone, triangle, mandolin) as those were captured on separate channels of the 2" 24-track elements only - such as solo tympani at the start of "Opening Sequence".
