YOUNG BAEZ

 By:   Graham Watt   (Member)

Hippy "peace movement" claptrap, purporting to "say something" about Vietnam, while clouding itself in pitifully childish "science fiction" ideas which would have H.G. Wells spinning in his grave. There are even "cute" robots, in a pathetic effort to show that even androids can be more "human" than warmongering governments. Add to that domes full of spinach and a distinct love of "trees", and we have the most dangerously subversive film since the sickening WOODSTOCK. Even Joan Baez is on board, smoking "weed", and pretending to solve the world's problems by wearing flowers in her hair, flowery dresses - or nothing at all. Intelligent audiences should run a mile. Leave this one for the drop-outs. With any luck they'll smoke themselves to death, thus leaving more room on the planet for people who can actually work for a living and contribute to the system.

So Leslie ..... you had a hard day of redemptive toil as a film reviewer and critic, eh? We need more men like you.

The world may not need Joan Baez' songs, or the music industry revenue they bring in, but by God, we have need of such men as you, to tell us what to watch. 'Keeps us on the straight and narrow.

Sorry solium. I thought that quoting old Les would actually add to the laffs.

I made the mistake of lending my Cinefex mag (in good faith) covering this great film to a cheat who never gave it back. Now I find the edition, which discussed the original Tron and Silent Running in tandem, is quite price-worthy. Fancy that!

Forget R2D2 and C3PO, the three drones of this film still are the most endearing robots to date.
Best scene is where they are waiting for Lowell and when he comes in, the lead drone taps the leg of the other one to wake it up.

The "operation" scene with the drones in combination with the music is so sad that I don't want to watch it anymore.

The only bad thing is that terrible Joan Baez song but then again I do hate all things hippy. The one weak thing in the story is that it took Lowell such a long time to find out that plants need light. For the rest, a sad rather delicate film that's a sign of it's time. What's more: no CGI, depleted colours, the godawfull orange and turqoise only, or that piss hideous yellow stained image, just craftsmanship and quality.

Right on Disco Stu . Needless to say I love this film. Sure it has some plot holes but it's otherwise well made and has it's heart in the right place.
