Not yet but I intend to. I always liked that film and find it much more entertaining than "Thunderball". Only downer is Rowan Atkinson's character. How that one got past quality control is a mystery to me. Despite that, "Nsna" is definitel more entertaining than anything after "Licence to kill" and a solid piece of entertainment. I qualify it as a good quality product.
Fun sore too.

Sure hope the blu is the uncut version. I seem to remember two versions of the old DVD floating around, one of which was about 4 minutes shorter.

I just picked this up recently - saw it for the first time in 1983 just after OCTOPUSSY.

I like it a lot:

BTW, I only paid 9.97 for the Blu on the Amazon Marketplace...:-)

Come on, be honest, Its fairly dire isnt?? Sexy Barbara carrera as a wicked nurse was about the best thing in it? Nursey give jack his candy!!
And Sean was standing under a bit of an odd hairpiece then wasnt he? It had moments i will give you that, but for me didnt compare to the first 7 bond films.

As part of their Bond collection?

Absolutely - why would anyone not, especially now it's been brought into the fold. Mine clocks in at 134 minutes, according to the (very small) writing on the back of the case.

I also didn't care for the Rowan Atkinson character, right from the first time I saw it on release. He was just breaking into the big time with the first Blackadder series and was presumably thought to be a crowd-pleaser. Didn't please this one.

Liked the film very much overall - marked down a bit for the Small-Fawcett character, the slightly overlong video game sequence and the grotesque horse stunt, but thumbs up for a black Felix, Barbara Carrera's cruel and flamboyant performance, Klaus Maria Brandauer, the pre-credit sequence and above all the score, which I seem to recall was really enhanced in the bluray presentation.

And while I understand it puts me in the minority, I really like the song.

Not many films of its type do compare with the first seven Bond films!

Didn't see your post until after I'd written mine, but happy that we agree about Barbara...

I saw the film on its cinema release and didn't think much of it. As a life-long fan of all things JB007 (well, the films, the music, the novels) this film came across as a poor attempt to cash-in. It proved to me that the film series was bigger and better than Sean Connery ... he may have played the character but it didn't make it a JB film.

I watched it during its first TV broadcast (keeping a VHS copy) and bought and viewed the DVD two or three times - last time during the marathon viewing of all the JB007 films leading up to Skyfall. I've now disposed of it. I find it difficult to say anything good about the film but should mention Klaus-Maria Brandauer ... shame he looked so bored throughout most the film.

Given it's possible to compare many scenes to the 1965 source Thunderball it's fair to comment upon one's views of this remake. There isn't a scene I prefer and, much as I like Max von Sydow, he was totally wasted. I can't agree with any of the complements lauded on Barabara Carerra: I disliked the character and her acting was so OTT that it became a joke and not a funny one.

Back in 1983 I couldn't understand how the script contained the same visual joke as an early episode of the long-running British TV series Porridge re: Bond filling the specimen jar ... from here?. Having read Robert Sellers' wonderful book The Battle for Bond I found the answer ... bringing in the same writers late in the day to make the script a bit more light-hearted. It makes a joke of Messrs. Purvis and Wade being criticised.

I won't say that I'll never watch the film again (pun or not ...) but I won't spend any money buying the BD. I'll happily watch Thunderball - time and again - instead.

Mitch

Yes, it is - but strangely enough I don't! And that's lucky, because there's no comparison between Thunderball and NSNA (although I think I'd swap Bernie Casey for Rik van Nutter). When I watch this, I take it on its own merits and try not to compare. And give me Domino from TB every time...

I bought the Blu ray as part of a sale at a F.Y.E. (For Your Entertainment) store.

I have it on Blu-ray and dvd. The Blu-ray's video is only a mild improvement over the dvd, so hopefully it will be remastered like the other Bond movies.

NSNA will always be part of the Bond story, the Bond near-canon if you will, and I value it, can't dismiss it, but I can't call it a favorite either. It the "funny uncle" of the family that I love but don't like.

The title song is okay, but the rest of the music doesn't work for me, and that's a big deal in Bond. The score feels all wrong to me. The source music is especially not to my liking.

Connery's big fight in the health spa could have been a lot better. It's slow and plodding, as if we're seeing a half-speed walk-through for actors learning the choreography. If I recall, NSNA's action is not very light on its feet in general, either as a concession to Connery's age, or because the director just didn't know how to make things fly.

I like Kim Basinger but her wardrobe is dated now, especially her '80s dancer-cise attire. NSNA also gets mired in a video game situation that's very dated. The EON Bonds have a way of aging more gracefully in the style department. They try to be current but shy away from fads.

That said, NSNA is a change-of-pace Bond with a lot of good scenes, and it's part of our history.

Connery makes the movie. The horrible score almost kills the whole movie for me. Might consider blu-ray if price is right.

And producer Jack Schwartzman called it a "great score!" Yeah, right!

It's a great score for some other movie.

NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN is a mess, but I prefer it over MOONRAKER, OCTOPUSSY or A VIEW TO A KILL.

I'd have cut the whole Shrublands interlude out of this remake of THUNDERBALL and gone with a straightforward action thriller about hijacking the jet and hunting for the warhead. I would have changed the location from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. The remake only demonstrates how much better the original film is. In both cases audiences never appreciated the hokey humor as much as the filmmakers did. On the plus side it is a pleasure to spend a couple of hours with Sean Connery, who inhabits the role with a charming grace.
