Cavill might well be neck-and-neck with Routh as the prettiest of the Supermen, but not the most compelling. But then, I don't think he was given enough of a script.

He did the best with what he had. He was an entirely different Superman than we had experienced previously. As an earlier post mentioned - he was a good "Superman as an alien - trying to find his place" as opposed to an American with super powers.
