There's no such thing as too much music.

With a collection of just over 6300 titles, downsizing is always near the front of my mind! lol

Fair enough. How many CDs do you own if I may ask?

OMG! I don't think I would want that many. I tend to revisit favourite scores and with such a number it would be near impossible.

We have just about the same amount of titles Spymaster. Me I'm just above 6400!

What I do, since everything I have gets converted digitally, is keep all the stuff I love and that will always be in the permanent collection, into an "active" HD, a version of which is in Apple Lossless so it all shows up in my iTunes.

Then I have another HD, more like a basement or an attic. That's where I put a lot of stuff I collect but don't really listen to, or where I put older versions of titles that just got an expanded or remastered release, that way my main library doesn't need to have 4 versions of Poltergeist II, just the latest one which is awesome is what I need.

It isn't really downsizing in the sense that I don't get rid of music or titles, but it appears as I do since I'm constantly removing or replacing things in my iTunes.

The actual cd's all go to storage in boxes, after they've been ripped and processed.

I don't like to downsize my collection though I admit I have more music than I have time to listen too. Instead of selling off CD's, I prefer to downsize playlists. At one time I desired C&C and welcomed 80-120 minutes of music per title. Nowadays I prefer shorter playlists, 30 to 60 minutes long, and just play the best stuff. This allows me to double or triple my listening output.

That's kind of the approach I'm moving to. But living in a city precludes storage in a basement, guilt about selling CDs and keeping digital, and no dream binders to store inserts and CDs.

I've been considering weeding out the collection for years. Far too many scores I just never listen to, and don't really care about. There are composers whose work I would never weed, but others, who have some scores I find just uninteresting. (For instance, I sometimes think I could weed out everything where Goldsmith used a harmonica, or Bernstein that danged ondes martinot. Not all, mind you, but certainly several.)

Might even let go of TAXI DRIVER, for instance. Good score, just something I will probably not listen to much.

I'm still considering. We'll see....

Once a year I'll give away older CD titles that I've replaced with a newer C&C release (or titles I bought but just can't get into, which is very rare). I just replaced Predator 2 and The Day The Earth Stood Still. I consider myself a film music enthusiast but not a collector. I only have 110-115 titles on my shelves.

I am pretty positive I will never reach over 1000. I started collecting about a few years ago and I have about 150 titles. I am already trading and replacing the ones I do have. I found out that this hobby is expensive and I have limited space. If I have some interest in that title, I will either buy the cheap version or listen to it free from somewhere else. I like to keep my collection limited.

...I found out that this hobby is expensive and I have limited space...

Space is an issue, but there are plenty of cheap LPs and CDs out there. Used CD prices have dropped dramatically as downloads have become the norm.

I remember a time when I could get used CD's for under $4 dollars (including shipping) from Amazon. Since they raised their shipping rates it's hard to get a used CD for less than $7 dollars. Still a good deal, just not as great as the old days.

There's been quite a number of threads about solving the space issue. Me, I traded the jewel cases for sleeves (only normal easily replaceable ones), and I haven't even come CLOSE to filling the space my collection took even back in 2005, excluding box set stuff.

Depends on how much space you have.

I have hundreds of titles, I can't imagine having thousands, let alone 6400! I usually get rid of older versions of titles that have received better or expanded treatment, unless each version is different enough to warrant keeping, like Conan The Barbarian or The Blue Max. I'm also selective about what I buy. When it comes to listening, it's all stored digitally and streamed on random play. That way I get to hear pieces from the majority of my collection in different ways. Keeps things fresh and interesting.

Yep. My wife is complaining about all my CDs and DVDs taking over. Gotta do something to get it under control. so she can stop suggesting I put it all into storage. wink

how many is too much?

it depends on musical taste:

300
1941
2001
20,000
...

My wife has decided that I have enough...489. She won't even let me get to my personal goal of 500.
