THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN
Music Composed and Conducted by Henry Mancini
Limited edition of 1000 units
Release date: 12/17/2014

Quartet Records and M.G.M. present the complete edition of Henry Mancini’s score for the fourth movie in the hilarious and famous Pink Panther saga, directed by Blake Edwards, with Peter Sellers as the clumsy Inspector Clouseau.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again is considered by many to be the funniest film of the series. Spectacle proved to be key for the film as United Artists gave it the international action flair afforded to their James Bond franchise. While Clouseau was as far from an employee of Her Majesty’s Secret Service as one could imagine, Edwards and his co-writer, Frank Waldman, gave their script a knowing spin on that popular series’ tropes. A now-insane ex-Chief Inspector Dreyfus (of course driven to distraction by Clouseau) takes up lodging at a henchman-filled castle, wherein he kidnaps a brilliant scientist and his daughter to build a gigantic matter-evaporating laser.

Although Strikes Again is far from the brilliant comedic glamour of the first Pink Panther movie – and from the still-charming The Return of the Pink Panther – there is no doubt that Mancini wrote here his best score for the series. The composer provides an impressive catalogue of the franchise’s quintessential style, including a memorable tune dedicated to Inspector Clouseau, German polkas and waltzes, French tangos, sophisticated suspense music (descended from the sound of other scores by the composer, such as Charade and Wait Until Dark) and action cues. Mancini also composed two lovely, original songs with lyrics by Don Black – one of them (“Come to Me”) is performed by Tom Jones with a vocal cameo by Peter Sellers. The “Main Title” sequence offers a new version of the Pink Panther Theme, interspersed with stunning arrangements by Mancini from such famous themes as Neal Hefti’s Batman, The Sound of Music, Singing in the Rain or Sweet Charity.

Music from The Pink Panther Strikes Again was released on LP in 1976 with 12 tracks, and reissued on CD in 2008 by Ryko with five bonus tracks, although the bonus material was in poor-sounding mono. But there was still much important material from this score to be released. For this complete edition, we have remixed the entire score from the 16-track masters recorded at C.T.S. Studios in London by John Richards, with amazingly clear and crystalline sound. As a result, we’re able to offer this new version in full stereo –and can say that it sounds like it was recorded yesterday!

The lavish package includes a 24-page full-color booklet, with extensive liner notes by Daniel Schweiger.

The Pink Panther seems to be striking an awful lot today.

That said, I love this score, and was always disappointed by those bonus tracks on the Ryko release (they seem to have been taken from a cleanish M&E track). I'm excited about this one.

My fav Panther score to my fav Panther film. Couldn't be happier. And interestingly (to me), it's the first soundtrack LP I ever had! Thanks, Quartet!

Ordered this beauty, a complete release of what I consider to be Mancini's finest "Panther" score.

Three cheers for Quartet.

Probably my favorite of the "Pink Panther" films with many memorable Sellers lines (Clouseau to Mrs. Leverlilly after damaging Fassbender's grand piano): 'that would account for your exaggerated hysteria over a simple blemish on the furniture.' Great stuff.

One thing that I've never understood about the Steve Martin "Panther" films is why the original "Panther" theme is so heavily featured in those films when Mancini actually used the tune very little in his sequel underscores (the theme originally created for the first film's David Niven cat burglar character), Mancini instead creating a fresh theme for Clouseau in this film and special music for characters like Dyan Cannon's Simone in "The Revenge of the Pink Panther."

I already have THE ULTIMATE PINK PANTHER cd which includes five tracks from the movie, but I'll probably get this one for the instrumental versions of "Come to Me".

So when is this movie going to be released in Blu-ray?

I would assume it is too much to hope that Dreyfus' version of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" is included. I remembered how crushed I was when the "Organ Interlude" on the Ryko version turned out not to be it.

I do like what I've heard from the samples and will most probably order it. Thanks!

Dear Quartet, will you ever allow to place an order without owning a PayPal account ? PayPal has an option to pay with credit card without subscribing to the service.

I'd prefer to order from you directly, because it's cheaper and maybe you make more of a profit that way, but that PayPal thing is a deal-breaker.

Oh, by the way, great, great, great batch of releases today ! Ordered them all (but elsewhere).

I gladly do so for US releases, but I'm in France, so Quartet's releases are cheaper when ordered from them in Spain. I bought them from Music Box eventually : there is a slight price overhead, but they have the pay-with-PayPal-with-credit-card-without-subscribing thing.

If I remember correctly, I have the same problem on Tadlow's online shop.

Having owned the Ryko version for many years I'm not sure if I'll go for this ... I struggle to agree that it's the best PP score ... for me they go downhill from the original. That said, the sound clips certainly do sound sharper than the old CD. So maybe, if I'm looking to make a purchase, I shall add this to the basket.

I see from the track listing that Michael Robbins (of UK: On the Buses fame) is still credited with the vocal on (the awful rendition of) Until you Love Me. Perhaps Quartet can't use the real singer's identity for royalty/legal reasons: Julie Andrews.

This is awesome. I will definitely be buying if it can just last for a little bit. I have picked up all of the expanded Pink Panther scores so far (which wasn't that easy, because the one Intrada released sure flew out the door fast!)

I really hope complete tapes can somehow be located for the first three films in the series too. I'm especially looking forward to A Shot in the Dark if it's possible...

BTW, this issue is the first of the actual film tracks (aside from the Ryko bonus tracks), right? Or was the LP version not a re-recording?

I keep hoping for the debut of A SHOT IN THE DARK, but this release more than makes up for it.

Very cool!
Very Ordered!!

Coming mid Jan??
No problem, less damage to wallet!!

Thanks Quartet!

A great title for the festive season. The Inspector Clouseau Theme and The Pink Panther Theme are the best instrumental pieces from the PP series. Samples sound great.

Anticipating more Quartet/MGM collaboration next Christmas.

Overall a very good batch.

Noo! That's not true! That's impossible!

I so remember seeing it with my mother on opening day.
