INTRADA Announces:

NO MAN OF HER OWN/THUNDER IN THE EAST/WILD HARVEST
Composed by Hugo Friedhofer
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 288

Intrada announces a trio of Hugo Friedhofer scores from the Paramount vaults in this latest edition of the Intrada Special Collection. In Wild Harvest (1947), set against images of combines threshing amber waves of grain, Friedhofer put his “Americana stamp” on the score with a bright major-mode theme, featuring galloping trumpet and woodwind figures set to a Copland-flavored syncopation in the bass line. In the film, Alan Ladd stars as Joe Gibson, the foreman of an itinerant harvesting crew in wheat country. Robert Preston plays his freewheeling buddy Jim, and Dorothy Lamour sexily slinks her way through the film as a scheming farmer’s niece.

For 1953’s Thunder in the East, Friedhofer gave his signature bold harmonies an Oriental flair. The film is set during the taut early days of Indian statehood following the end of British rule in 1947. Alan Ladd stars as Steve Gibbs, a Yank who lands in the tiny mountainous principality of Ghandahar with a plane full of guns and ammunition to sell to the local maharaja. With the Brits under threat of death by invading tribal forces, Gibbs must weigh his options between his mercenary ambitions and his feelings for the blind woman he loves (Deborah Kerr).

In 1950’s No Man of Her Own, Barbara Stanwyck poses as the wife of a dead man in order to start a new life and give her newborn bastard son a name. When she goes to live with the deceased’s family, she falls in love with her “husband’s” brother Bill (John Lund), while her former lover (Lyle Bettger) threatens to expose her secret. Friedhofer’s score is built on a trio of strong themes that provide rhythmic and melodic cells throughout the score to increase the tension as Helen’s situation becomes more tenuous and bleak. Throughout the score, Friedhofer uses vibraphone and harp figures to pull Helen in and out of her indecisive and guilty dreamlike state. For all its mid-century melodramatic trappings, Friedhofer utilizes his customary musical craftsmanship to capture the emotion and drama lurking behind the story’s seemingly implausible situations.

No Man of Her Own and what still exists of Thunder in the East have been mastered from 2?transfers of mono 35mm mag originals, and Wild Harvest comes from acetates housed at Brigham Young University. As an added bonus and included among the extras is a revised track from Bride of Vengeance that incorporates a “Foreword” which Intrada was unable to include on its earlier release of that score.

I like the Bride of Vengeance CD very much, so I'm happy to see the extra "foreword" from that score provided as a bonus on the new disc.

Westerns seem to bring out the best in every composer. WILD HARVEST was a modern western for it's time and Friedhofer's score is the one that knocks me out of the three. Hardy thanks to Intrada!

I hope to get this CD in a day or two. It's a must-have for golden age fans and Friedhofer fans. I'm surprised there aren't more comments from the usual people here on this board. I've never seen any of the films so for me it's like Hugo just wrote the music. I'm especially anxious to hear WILD HARVEST as many have commented on the high quality of the score.

Thanks Intrada! smile

Another thread was opened and maybe this made some confusion.
I myself wrote briefly on "Coming from Intrada".

Yes, this Friedhofer release deserves more and more comments, but I'm sure the sales will speak for themselves.

Yes, this may be the case finder4545. I hope it sells well for Intrada.

I'm very pleased with this. No Man of Her Own is terrific and alone is worth the cost of the CD. Sound is solid and warm.

The surviving tracks from Thunder in the East are mostly less appealing to me. The colorful Prelude is very good, but much of what remains is rather dull atmospherics and drumbeats. Good sound quality.

Wild Harvest is a very fine score. But those with an aversion to acetate rustlings and swishes won't be happy. For me, the music is so good, I'm happy to have it even with its sound limitations.

The bonus cue (Foreword) from Bride of Vengeance is worth having if you like that score. It's only a minute or so, but by having this "basic" rendition of the theme at the start of the score, we get a better introduction and foundation for the variations on the theme that appear later.

PFK, I am very pleased with this CD as I have mentioned on my post on the Intrada website. I go by a different moniker there. You will enjoy it.

Cody, I'm playing the CD right now, No Man Of Her Own. I am indeed very happy with it. Any Friedhofer is a must-buy for me.

You know back in the 1960s I was able to obtain all 8 of the Friedhofer LPs. I thought that would be it, plus what I recorded off TV. Never dreamed 50 years later we are getting more Hugo!

The 3 Friedhofer I want the most are Hondo, Vera Cruz and Joan of Arc. I doubt we will ever see them though. I especially like Hondo, both film and score. Would the tapes be at WB? The John Wayne estate? Or?

I would like to see any label reissue the music tracks only to Island in the Sky on CD.

What is your moniker at Intrada? HuckF? Maybe I should join there too.

Yes, JOAN OF ARC, VERA CRUZ and HONDO would also be my top 3 picks. Look for Monte J... at Intrada. Enjoy !

Ah Cody, like I said before, we were separated at birth! smile

I've been reading the Intrada comments since it started, just never joined in. It's an interesting site for film music discussion. The Rozsa and Herrmann sites are excellent too.

Perhaps a golden age CD or two will be issued for Black Friday?

The "evil" theme of Joe Erin-Lancaster in VERA CRUZ sounded ever reminiscence of David Raksin to my ear. Is this only an impression or in some way connected with the APACHE production with Raksin on the score?

I'm looking forward to this one too. And I agree, Bride of Vengeance is a wonderful score - any extras are therefore very welcome. Friedhofer was a truly subtle talent. I seem to recall somewhere that Previn cited him as his primary influence during his Hollywood days.

I got this CD months ago and - to my surprise - I love No Man Of Her Own the most out of these 3 scores.

The one I like least is Wild Harvest. Not because of the acetate sources, but because the Americana idiom in which Wild Harvest is written does not appeal to my tastes personally.

I was expecting to like Thunder In The East the best, but that No Man Of Her Own is truly 4-star/top drawer Friedhofer excellence with me. smile
