Autodidact that I am, I frequently clip items in newspapers and magazines for the purpose of supplementing the information in relevant books, DVD's or CD's. Here's one in today's New York Times which I just inserted into the booklet with Jon Burlingame's typically excellent notes for HAWKINS ON MURDER, WINTER KILL and BABE.

Which naturally led me to listening to the album for the first time since it was brand new. I have so many Goldsmith CD's, (or perhaps I should say there are so very few Goldsmith CD's that I don't have), that I fear I'm probably one of those fanboys whom Mr. Goldsmith chided for collecting his scores like bottle caps. But, damn -- how could I not? Just listening to Track 2 (from HAWKINS) brought back to me all at once why we love him so. The first half is so forcefully dramatic that a movie-loving listener could easily mistake it as a cue for a powerhouse Cinemascope epic instead of a small screen tale; and a devotee of classical music could hear the concluding Sarabande without suspecting it is film music instead of a beautiful concert piece for strings, guitar and oboe. (Of course, it doesn't hurt to have Laurindo Almeida sitting in the guitarist's chair.)

Whence comes such another?

PS: Thanks again, Lukas, for this album and the 299 others!

I waited to reply but figured someone had to beat me to it, but given that even I'm an old fogey (bogey?) now, the chances decrease that people here care about non-sci-fi/adventure music Jerry from forty years ago. It is to weep.

A few of us discussed the fine Hawkins/Winter Kill/Babe FSM release some years ago in the following thread:

This has long been among my favorite FSM releases. I especially like Winter Kill, the dvd of which has been released on Warner Archives, as have the other two films. I have yet to see Hawkins and Winter Kill, but Babe aired some years ago on the Golf Channel(!) so I found myself there watching in order to get at the Goldsmith (Golfsmith?) within that network.

Hawkins also had music from the other Jerry, Fielding, making that series all the more desirable; however, I just got McMillan & Wife on dvd, so I have a LOT of viewing to do!

Thanks, Jim. Yes, this is indeed the Jerry we first fell in love with, a lot of us of a certain generation. I thought putting "Jerry" in my headline would be sufficient to get attention, but maybe I should have added "Zap! Kaboom!" Actually, to be fair, a number of people have looked in, but so far you're the first one to be moved to contribute your own two cents, and for that I thank you. I will now make a bee-line for that link!

I saw HAWKINS when it was first broadcast, ditto the series, because I'm such a Jimmy Stewart fan, (and so of course I have the DVD), but I never saw the other two. Now that I've enjoyed the CD so much, I will make up for lost time and get those other two CD's from Warner Archive. Much obliged for the head's up.
