Spaceman by Babylon Zoo. AKA some kid from Wolverhampton who sold a zillion CDs in about ten minutes and is presumably now lapping it up on a beach somewhere for the rest of his life.
Dutch singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen, creator of many OTT pompous prog rock/metal albums under the band-name Ayreon in the late-90s/early-2000s, also created a side-project called Star One.
They released a couple of albums with songs based on films or TV programmes; Space Metal (2002) and Victims Of The Modern Age (2010).
He's the only core member on his albums, as his projects typically comprise a multitude of guest singers and instrumentalists from various prog bands, so the songs on each album will have different singers, or several singers in one song playing their "roles".
Below is the tracklisting of Space Metal so you can see his inspirations:
-- Set Your Controls - Doctor Who -- High Moon - Outland -- Songs of the Ocean - Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home -- Master of Darkness - Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back -- The Eye of Ra - Stargate -- Sandrider - Dune -- Perfect Survivor - Alien -- Intergalactic Space Crusaders - Blake's 7 -- Starchild - 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010
It's all on YouTube if you want to go looking, although it is a bit of an acquired taste.
Anyway, you won't hear any familiar musical themes from the source material. They're his own songs, but for anyone into that kind of music, it's fun spotting all the references and in-jokes in the lyrics.
As an example, here's the lyrics for Songs Of The Ocean, based on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
[Science officer:] As we return to earth, memories are haunting me My strange rebirth, coming back to life I remember the dark and how my friends set me free I sacrificed my life so they could survive [Communications officer:] There's something wrong on planet Earth We can not reach our world Some strange device slowly emerged Can you hear the cries? There's something wrong, what can we do? We can't communicate All systems fail, all power too We can't reply [Science officer:] It must be unaware of the damage it's creating They are reaching out to the seven seas It's not with man they're communicating We're going back in time, back in history [Captain:] We shape life, we travel space But we don't know the words to the songs of the ocean [Doctor:] We survived the 'human race' But we don't know the words to the songs of the ocean
And here's Perfect Survivor, where the lyrics are basically outlining the premise of the Alien film:
