TUESDAY, MAY 6

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII---a source said Max von Sydow is the sequel's villain and the working title of the sequel, THE ANCIENT EVIL, refers to him.

THE WALKING DEAD---Seth Gilliam (TEEN WOLF, THE WIRE) joins the cast in an undisclosed role, but speculation is he will play preacher Gabriel Stokes.

24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY---the miniseries premiere drew an impressive eight million viewers. Executive producer Howard Gordon said there could be more, "In the world of 24, it's always good to take it one day at a time. So we've had a good time doing this…assuming the audience embraces it and continues to embrace it, then we ask ourselves the question: Do we have another story to tell? Another day?" Mary Lynne Rajskub added, "The scripts have been really good, so I can't imagine that there wouldn't be a little bit more now that they've gone through the trouble of bringing it back."

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN---director Marc Webb commented on the next villain, "Kraven. Kraven. I like the idea of Kraven. The Vulture. Ock. I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven I think is kind of interesting."

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY-PART 2---Michelle Forbes (STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, TRUE BLOOD) joins the sequel cast as Lt. Jackson.

JASON BOURNE---Matt Damon said he might return to the Bourne franchise, "I've always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director. We've just never been able to come up with a story... It felt like such a good way to end it last time. Having said that, I love that character. I'd love to see what happened to him."

MANIAC COP---remake of the 1988 slasher movie is underway with a script by Ed Brubaker (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER). Nicolas Winding Refn is the producer.

GOTHAM---Fox ordered a full season of the series about Gotham City police detective James Gordon. Also, WGN America renewed SALEM, Netflix renewed ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK and HBO resurrected THE COMEBACK starring Lisa Kudrow. NBC pulled BELIEVE and CRISIS from the May sweeps lineup which indicates both series have been cancelled.

TUT---Spike TV six-hour miniseries underway about King Tut, Egypt's youngest pharaoh.

HALLOWEEN 3D---Scout Taylor-Compton said she's returning for the next movie which will be a sequel to the Rob Zombie movies and not a reboot.

SPRING BREAKERS: THE SECOND COMING---followup movie underway which will be an indirect sequel to SPRING BREAKERS in which characters from the original movie might return or will be alluded to.

MR. RIGHT---Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick star in this movie about a woman who finally finds Mr. right only to discover he's a former hitman with a past that's about to catch up with him.

PLAY IT AGAIN, DICK---CW Seed digital spin-off of VERONICA MARS in which Ryan Hansen plays himself as he "begs, cajoles, and pleads with his former Veronica Mars castmates and friends to help him get his character, Dick Casablancas, his own spin-off show."

OH!---untitled Paul Verhoeven (TOTAL RECALL) movie underway based on the French novel about a woman who seeks revenge on the stalker who raped her.

Well, someone tried *extra* hard to come up with a worse subtitle than THE PHANTOM MENACE.

...so they can have something cool to cancel.

NBC pulled BELIEVE and CRISIS from the May sweeps lineup which indicates both series have been cancelled.

Too bad, I've been enjoying both. NBC strikes again.

Gotham got an order for 13 episodes, in the old days that would be called a half season.
Series used to run 22 and up to around 26 episodes a year, 13 is not much. But yeah, Fox will cancel it before it reaches about the 8th episode.

That "source" is Harry Knowles on Aint It Cool News. That site hasn't had a genuine scoop in years and it seems extremely coincidental that Knowles' site is the only one that has this intel and that other, better sites don't.

AICN has been in financial difficulty for some time (including trouble with the IRS and lately being used for copyright infringment) and has also been haemorrhaging readers for the past few years (partly because of the lack of scoops) and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that this title (which Knowles repeatedly refers to as a "working title" to cover himself even though I don't think any of the Star Wars films have had working titles - Sure Jedi changed its name mid shoot, but "Revenge" was an actual title, with a trailer and teaser poster released with that name, and "Blue Harvest" was a cover story not a working title) is just a fabrication to get more traffic to the ailing site. True or false, a Star Wars rumour like this will attract a lot of hits, particularly as this is an exclusive1 "scoop".

Knowles is a pretty loathsome individual and I'm pretty sure he isn't beneath such subterfuge.

Believe is getting better, yes.

It's not surprising it would have to be a spoof spinoff, as giving the appropriately-named Dick Casablancas an actual spinoff would be suicidal.

13 episodes is the new thing for serialized series. You can thank cable TV for that. And, for the most part, it works just fine.

Ok, having done a bit of investigative work, I'm now calling BS on Harry Knowles' scoop that Star Wars Episode VII will be called The Ancient Fear. Here's why;

1. No domain name has been registered for Theancientfearmovie.com, Theancientfearmovie.com or any variation of same. If you use any of the prequel subtitles as a URL in a webbrowser (i.e. Attackoftheclones.com) you are re-directed to the official Star Wars site star wars.com. Not so if you plug Theancientfearmovie.com into a browser. If this was really the name they were using, Disney would have registered domains for every possible permutation of the name. They haven't.

2. On 24 March 2004, Knowles ran a scoop announcing the title of Star Wars Episode III. According to Knowles' sources the film was to be called The Creeping Fear. It wasn't.

You can read the last "Fear" scoop here:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/17252

That foul stench you can smell is Harry Knowles' pants on fire.

I for one prefer the shorter, "cable-sized" 12-or-less episode season to the old 20+ model...less bloat, more focused storytelling.

Mike, the working title (if it's true) is ANCIENT EVIL, not FEAR.

While we all know the real reason is to cut down on production costs, in theory yes, less episodes should lead to tighter writing and less filler. I'm alright with that for the most part. What I don't like however are two and a half months of programming, then these shows go on hiatus for 12 or 14 months at a time. (while they film new episodes I presume) It just sucks the sails out of any momentum a show may have.

Yes he did. "Attack of the Clones". What is this? A drive-in flick? (After watching it) Yes. Yes it is.

I'll take "The Ancient Evil" over either title.

I bet it'll be changed anyway.

Umm.... You guys do know that "Star Wars" (as well as the Indiana Jones series) is partly based on those Saturday morning serials, which had titles like "The Creeping Phantom" and "Buck Rogers and the Attack of the Mutant Creatures" (titles I just made up, but you get my drift).

BTW, when I found out in 1979 that "Star Wars 2" (as it had been titled during production) was finally named "The Empire Strikes Back", my heart sank. Not exactly a title that inspires a lot of confidence. And I wasn't the only one who felt that way. It wasn't until people had actually seen the film that the cheesiness of the title was overlooked/forgotten.

"A New Hope" doesn't really lend itself to the space epic that actually appears onscreen either.

Kevin, it isn't - the supposed title that Harry "that's-no-moon-it's-a-space-station" Knowles is saying is Ancient Fear.

It works fine unless it is a good show you like, since the sooner it is cancelled you are left with - well not much. 4 year the old way would give you about 100 episodes of something you like, characters and story arcs building over time. 13 episodes is not much.

And by the same admission, the last chapter made in the series had a character named General Grievous.

So its not like Star Wars is known for having better command of language as they progress.

And I'm not saying "ditch all the Saturday Morning Serial stuff" either - I don't want this to be a dull, Christopher Nolan affair - but yeesh, its a bad title.

Star Wars Episode VIII: MORE BAD THINGS HAPPEN AGAIN

Star Wars is mostly about stylistic facade layering over a throwback kitch homage to yesteryear serials. Really, it has over played that hand in my mind. It is like all the throwback nostalgic fonts we see on signage, t-shirts and brands everywhere. I see the 'antique' fonts on freshly painted signs, and I go - yeah sure, whatever.

George created this fusion of nostalgia and future before steam-punk was cool, but the brand is more than a little creaky 40 years on. Much the same is the case with Star Trek, although Star Trek could always just shoot some guys standing in some office with a backdrop window looking at some painted ships and it was still Star Trek. JJ rebranded, not totally successfully, Star Trek.

But Star Wars has always pushed the paradox further between throwback nostalgia serials / Arthurian legends and total technological idealization of the future (or past) according to the set-up of the 1977 Star Wars. It started to show the seams in the prequels, the super-saturation of effects pulled the sequels apart from the roots of what it was. If JJ is smart he would drop the bar on technology and ultra-galactic war and go back to simpler times with knights wandering through the cosmos on their horses / spaceships.

I agree. Star Wars was a "fun" movie. It has gotten so bogged down in melodrama and convoluted plot details. Remove all that and make it a simple good guys VS bad guys space adventure.

^ This. This X 10.

And, regarding the titles, the only one I really don't like is Attack of the Clones. The others all work for me, but that was too silly. Kind of like the movie.
