http://www.npr.org/2014/05/04/309562142/composer-elliot-goldenthals-new-work-in-an-odd-key

The OC Register had a big piece too but it's subscription only.

Interesting little conversation -- wish I could have heard the audio references. Would like to hear Goldenthal's symphony, although I've rarely been charmed by the attempts of film composers to write symphonies.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Goldenthal is probably the least 'film composery' film composer out there.

Most of the people we think of as true film composers don't really have much success in the concert hall. On the other hand many of the composers we think of as "classical" have some of the best scores in the history of film.

I've been listening to his recent Symphony in G Sharp Minor recently (a copy of the radio broadcast -- it has not yet been released), and it's a wonderful piece. It's quite reminiscent of SPHERE throughout. In fact, I think he may very well be using material from that score here, especially the last movement.

Has anyone else had the opportunity to hear it?

Is the radio broadcast archived online somewhere? I'd love to hear it.

I haven't heard any mention of the new Othello Symphony put out in April. I think its a satisfying alternate take on the Suite released on Varese, with engaging sound quality as well.
Check it out everyone!

I've postponed the purchase of the OTHELLO symphony, as I already have the old ballet CD from Varese -- but I assume the interpretation is different enought to justify it.

What we really need is more of his unreleased concert works out there -- like this new Symphony in G Sharp Minor.

Best New Symphony":

"To Elliot Goldenthal’s taut, cogent and edgy Symphony in G-sharp minor, given its premiere by Carl St.Clair and the Pacific Symphony."

I jst got the Symphony in G Minor...I'd like to inform those unsuspecting ones that this CD is less that 25 mins! He could have padded it out with something, even if it was just a video of the performance.

Makes total sense to download this from iTunes, which is $7.99 vs $25 for the CD (which doesn't ship until June according to Amazon.ca!)

It was released here May 12th for 12.99. I knew it was only 2 tracks, but only 24:45 long I didn't know!

Honestly, the film versions of this symphony are way better.

Othello Symphony didn't really impress me... just the collection of shorter cues and not especially well performed unfortunately...

While the Symphony in G Minor is a bit more impressive as a stand out work and is performed quite well, it just doesn't have any real resolution or finale that would offer decent finish to the work... and just ends rather abruptly. Some nice Sphere bits here and there are nice surprise, though.

Elliot should come back to movies soon.

He's done the MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM film by Julie Taymour that premiered at festivals last year, and is hopefully released more widely soon. I don't know how much new music he wrote, and how much is leftovers from the stageplay he did several years ago, but should be interesting nonetheless.

I agree with you, though. I'd love to see him do another, more "mainstream" film soon.
