I'm unfortunately 'way behind' in much of this. I'm eagerly awaiting season 2, but as a rental from Netflix. It's in my 'saved queue' which means it could be out whenever the Netflix Gods deem it to be. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the first season.

Ooh i missed the announcement of series 3 after it was canned towards the end of series2. So is this the way forward? Bbc becomes secondary to decisions to finance series??

Many historians have giddily spoken of the art with which many Civil War soldiers wrote home. Intellectually flowing as one can argue they did from the Isles, I must clarify my appreciation for the language in this series. It is at times slightly convolute, yet so wonderfully artful and robust. Refreshingly so in our world of truncate english and acronym. (heh heh: original typo was "neglish"...) It is often a joy merely to hear this speech. With dramatic point in addition. I dunno. I just watched the train-crash episode, and there was the classic repeated mistake twice of 'you and I' in the accusative, object position, when it should have been 'you and me'. That's irritating, and something no speaker of that particular calibre then would have done. Also, there's a big difference between what they spoke and what they wrote. In Victorian times one would never write 'I can't' instead of 'I cannot', but they'd SAY the shorter version, especially the criminal types. Artistic stylization I suppose for atmosphere, but not overly convincing. Also, in this episode, the forensics were discerned in about two minutes by the American character, in a way that's frankly even more absurd than Conan-Doyle, just to get the plot rushed along. It needs a polish here and there. They're shooting series 4 in Dublin.

Never mind that, mccrum, did you spot your mate yet?! He's just finished (or about to shoot) so that'll be series 4 I think. I know who he's playing, but I'm not sure if it's allowed to say. Don't get me wrong, I like the series, it just needs a shine up here and there. I didn't see the first season.

This one's getting pretty deep after episode 2 .....

Yeah was good but grim ending. Theyre also messing with the character of the characters - a common trait seen more in soaps. A rock solid pious detective suddenly conveniently capable of murder? A previously decent madam now associating with a murderer and up to no good and being ruthless. Dunno, it kinda doesnt ring true.

You can see where they're going: we all carry the causes of evil inside ourselves etc., like Lumet's 'The Offence', but he spelt it out a bit too obviously with his 'we are the abyss' speech, even before he knew his own connection to the girl. Still, it's compelling.
