Agree about not requiring an expansion as there's plenty on there, though it seems to be OOP from what I can tell so a reissue may be welcome for some folk. Fine score and I also really like the song. Still haven't seen the movie.

I personally found the movie so bloody awful it's hard to separate the admittedly very fine score for it from my mind! Unless you're a Ron Howard/Tom Cruise fan, I say stick to the music.

I'd say it's in need of a reduction -- namely the removal of that schlocky Enya song which is inconveniently stuck between Williams' climactic cue and the end title.
I had a chuckle the other day. While listening to Star Trek's "The Naked Time", I noticed Riley's theme, especially the quieter passages when he is feeling saddened, uses that same Irish tune that Williams used for Far and Away...
If I remember correctly, Williams took the assignment because it allowed him to write Irish-inspired music (just as he took on HOME ALONE because he wanted to write Christmas music). He sometimes does that -- the idiom of music is more important than the quality of the film.
I'd say that is as good a reason as any, probably even better. Let's you write music you feel like writing. That's why Rózsa took on some assignments, too.
I remember that the movie was okay, not a great classic by any means, but not that bad either; a typical Hollywood studio-star-potboiler. John Williams' music was clearly the best thing about it though.
I generally agree. But, it does looks gorgeous. And, the "land race" sequence is some pretty impressive film making.

Yep, the song wasn't written for the movie, and I don't think it's even in the film (haven't seen it since it was first release in theaters). On very early releases of Enya's album "Shepherd Moons," the song doesn't have the added lyric "Far and Away." Pretty sure it's also only in Gaelic.

Agreed that the album as it is is very good and has a good musical flow. I don't think an expansion is needed or would add much, as the score is well represented as is. Though a re-release would probably be welcomed by those who don't have the score yet (expanded or not, the score is worth picking up). :-)

I need to see this again. I only saw it once in the theater. But, I loved the way Mikael Solomon shot it. I know it has its flaws. But, I still have fond memories of the film. Nicole Kidman looks wonderful (before the plastic surgery). Plus, it's always fun to hear Williams' score against the movie.
