I enjoy "Far and Away," and in fact just listened to it a couple of weeks ago.

But I've never liked "The Patriot" at all. In fact, I believe that's the only John Williams score of the past ten years that I've really disliked.

And since you brought it up, Ron, I love the score for "Hook," as long as I can forget the movie. And in fact, I should say I love the album for "Hook," because the music is terrible in the (terrible) movie. But as an album, I really enjoy it!

I'm so sorry you feel that way! I LOVE the score of "THE PATRIOT". MArk O'Connor on the violin is amazing and I listen to the score very often. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. THE PATRIOT is way better to listen to than MANY of William's scores, IMO. (such as "War of the Worlds, Minority Report, etc).

Oh yes, "Hook" was...blecch across the board. I actually remember leaving the theater in disgust. Hoffman was so BAD.

Wow, really? I thought Hoffman was tops.

The movie was fine for me - until they introduced the Lost Boys. Everything after that was a steep slope downhill. (But I do occasionally watch it on rainy afternoons)

It's weird! It's like we all don't like the same things!

I'll sort it out: Everybody please like what I like.

Thanks.

Far and Away is one of my favorite John Williams scores. In fact I like it better than most of the Star Wars scores.

While Ron Howard filmed Far and Away in 70mm it to me seem like this TV movie of the week. Ron Howard's Far and Away was cold, and not once was impressed with anything about it, cept Johnny Williams music. IT was so much better than what I saw on screen.

It was a typical hollywood genre flic, had potatoes, Irish Fighters, Poor people Fighting for their food, Poor people breaking into rich people's houses. A farmer's daughter, who's shit didn't stink. And on and on.

I neither laughed, or saw anything that amazed me. It was rather limp, like Tom Cruise's Acting.

Yup, it's The Land Race in Williams' score to FAR & AWAY that does the trick for me -- although I enjoy the entire score, as it's a 'Williams' score! I thought the film was bland - to say the least -- bad casting I thought - even though I think both leads are just fine in other film roles. I thought Thomas Gibson stole every scene he was in - and always thought HE should have played the Cruise part! As this script was originally titled AN IRISH STORY - I thought it odd they couldn't cast the leads with actual IRISH actors!
As for HOOK -- I love, love, love the SCORE -- but the film is so uneven and really boring for a Spielberg film! I always felt Steven should have taken Johnny Williams' lead and made this Peter Pan remake a M U S I C A L !! If all the characters SANG their parts I think the film would've taken off terrifically. John's music totally s i n g s along -- and the Bergman's had already provided Williams with songs for this if I'm not mistaken!!!

Hoffman was hamming it up wonderfully. And while I see the comparisons to FAR AND AWAY (score-wise), I find HOOK to be a thrilling score, listening to Williams juggling over a dozen themes and motifs. Not an ounce of filler in the score. And I love each and every theme.

As for FAR AND AWAY- I think it's a decent score, with some fantastic set-pieces. The score's earnestness and obviousness mirror the film's (which is quite a terrible one, irritating accents galore).

Hoffman was hamming it up wonderfully.

I thought Hoffman was amusing, but completely ineffectual as a character in the film. As a villain, he was completely non-threatening! That said, at least he kept me amused, which is more than I can say for anything else in the film.

I used to think Hoffman was fine. But I saw an interview with him a few years back, saying that him and bob Hoskins decided to play Hook and Smee as an aging gay couple. I don't know why that changed my point of view (I mean, hook and Smee have always been that, in essence), but I saw the film after that, and I thought that Hoffman and Hoskins were great fun.

I've always had a great fondness for "Hook", probably because I was exactly the right age for it when it came out. (As Hoffman's Hook puts it, "To a ten year-old, I'm huge.") So while I can understand its shortcomings intellectually, I still have an emotional connection to the film, and enjoy it immensely.

It remains my favorite John Williams score. Massive in scope, dizzying in execution ... an overflowing cornucopia of musical riches. The album only begins to do it justice.

So I revisited this film again, after some 15 years, at least.

The film is a little clichéed and stereotypical, Tom Cruise is his usual hammy self (why does he have to RUN in all his films, btw?) and both Tom and Nicole speak in a bizzare, warped Irish. But it's gorgeous to look at, including some great crane shots and it stays entertaining throughout. I love "journey" movies like this.

Williams' score is from my favourite period of his - probably because it was the period where I first fell seriously in love with his music - i.e. the early 90's. I just love that polished, sweeping, lush style he used at the time.

What really stands out here is the sweeping music for the vista shots and montages. It's probably not the music to show Williams criticizers who only think he writes larger-than-life, "pompous" music, but it's quite lovely - even if some of those pan flute solos in the Irish scenes border a little too closely on Gheorge Zamfir territory for good measure.

Also some fun "jigues" for the boxing matches, aided by The Chieftains.

There are moments of harsh dissonance too, the best example being the fire scene.

And the "Land Race" cue is of course Williams at his best; adding a rhythm and vivacity to the proceedings that wouldn't have been half as effective otherwise.

All in all, it's a great and varied album that I keep coming back to.

FAR AND AWAY does not rank at the top of my John Williams favorites list; but, I never tire of hearing it. Perhaps it's because I'm also a huge fan of Enya AND The Chieftains. Another Williams album I never tire of spinning is THE REIVERS.

There is surprising wealth of Americana built half way into the score that realy shines and The Land Race snippets even made into the 2000 AMERICAN JOURNEY suite! This is a gem of a score, lush, melodic and warmth.

The PATRIOT pales in comparasion but that too has some handful of cues that shine otherwise I love the main title from the film- now that's classic piece and worth the admission or price of the cd itself!

Amer

P.S When Im feeling down or low, I usualy play FAR & AWAY to make myself better and it works!

I always liked Williams' FAR AND AWAY just fine. Never saw the movie.

Unfortunately for me, I did see HOOK. I may have said this before, but I loved Williams' score, and kept wishing that I was seeing on the screen what Williams was making me hear in my head. Or, I wished Mr. Spielberg and his writers had created the movie that Mr. Williams was scoring instead of the movie they did make. Wonderful music.

THE REIVERS is a great favorite, a world unto itself in my personal pantheon. But then, this was when I was first hearing on the big screen the composer I'd loved for TV's "Alcoa Premiere."

On the other, hand I've never been that taken with this particular Williams effort. Like Amistad and The Patriot, it goes for a rather dumbed-down, audience-friendly take on epic history. It has some rousing moments but, like the movie itself, it has a clichéd phoniness with is most uncharacteristic of John Williams when he tackles these kinds of movies.

This is one of my favorites of his scores; I love the End Title and the blending of the themes; I play it often.
