The actor forever known as R2-D2 has passed away at age 81.

Fidgit goes to the Supreme Being. RIP Kenny Baker. The BBC says he was 81.

Sorry to hear that, but it certainly seems like good innings. I seem to remember that diminuative people (is that the politically correct term these days?) live -- on average -- about 10 years shorter than normal-sized people, although it obviously depends on the type of illness that you have. In either case, 83 seems like a good run.

Did he ever do anything else (known) beyond R2-D2?

He did have a good long life and a great run, yes. I hate to say it, but my sadness is partly out of selfishness, in that I never got to meet him or anything like that.

Aside from Star Wars, he mostly had various bit parts and background roles, albeit occasionally in such high-profile releases as Amadeus and Labyrinth. His biggest role with his own face and voice is probably Fidgit in Time Bandits, another personal favorite. He was also in the bawdy and hilarious Boobs in the Wood.

R.I.P. Kenny. 81 (or 83) is not bad, not bad at all.

Can't believe only 6 people(Including me) have posted to this! Baker was a cultural icon, even if you never saw his face in the SW films. Yet another cherished part of my youth gone. frown

I know how you feel. I wanted to post something earlier, but wasn't sure what to say. I can simply say, if you love 'Star Wars' as much as some of us do, there are no words.... frown

R.I.P., Kenny

Jim Cleveland and Jenkwombat...

I JUST GOT HERE!

After Star Wars...
Kenny Baker appeared in The Elephant Man and Flash Gordon in 1980.
He appeared in The Time Bandits in 1981.
And Return Of The Jedi in 1983.
Amadeus in 1984.
Willow in 1988.

And he had many credits after that.
Kenny had a long and highly successful career in the film industry, and he will be missed.

Rest In Peace, Kenny.

I was rather disappointed - although not especially suprised - that, of all the tributes to Baker from his Star Wars colleagues, the one from Anthony Daniels was rather po-faced.

He said:

Sad to hear of Kenny's passing. One of the truly original cast, so famed for his iconic role as R2. He'll always be remembered by so many fans."

Hardly a warm tribute, compared with what the likes of Mayhew and Hamill said.

It's pretty well known amongst movie fans that Daniels abhorred Baker for some reason but you would have thought he could have shown a little more class than this.

One of the better extended interviews with Kenny Baker from years ago. Some great stories. I learned a lot about the man and his early career in show business alongside Jack Purvis, who many of us know from his 80's film appearances in Time Bandits, Brazil, and a personal favorite of mine (and lots of others I'm sure) The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Baker lived a full life for someone who had tremendous odds against him from the start. And he says as much in the interview. RIP

So Kenny Baker doesn't get the DiMucci Poster Treatment? (Neither did Anthony Valentine).

Daniels has always seemed to enjoy strutting around like a peacock at various Star Wars related events throughout the decades. Perhaps someone needs to occasionally remind him that just like Kenny Baker, he too was only chosen because he was small enough to fit into a robot costume.

I met him at the Forbidden Planet bookshop the day after Empire opened in the UK and then he was very nice and friendly. However I have heared multiple reports since then that he really has become very full of himself and massively overestimates his own contribution to the Star Wars movies.

That's not true at all. The final Threepio costume was sculpted around a mold of his body, after he was cast (in both senses). I mean, he did fit the general physical description they were thinking of, but so did Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, etc.

I met Daniels once, in 1998 (and saw him again giving a talk at Walt Disney World just a few years ago, but I didn't interact with him then), and he was gracious and charming, as he was in every interview and was reported to be in every article by other people that I ever encountered over the first couple decades of the saga's existence. Over the last several years, though, I've seen various accounts, increasing in frequency with time, that suggest he's anything other than nice and gentlemanly. Based on these latter-day accounts, my inclination is to think that as he's gotten older, he's become crankier, snarkier, and perhaps more bitter, which certainly happens with lots of people later in life. I'd like to think otherwise, though, of course, but obviously despite having followed his career and those of the other core cast members over the years, I certainly can't claim to know them.
