Forgot to mention some of the books I picked up while in Vienna back in March-April:

Between the Wars: Austrian Artists 1918-1938

Wien 1900

Museum Guide: Leopold Museum

Schiele: An Illustrated Life

Not at all! It did irritate the woman who had hoped to bring home her two-year-old son, though! wink

Three of those books are really small and thin; only the Austrian artists book is gigante.

Look at all the posts in this thread! FSMers really love art, don't they? wink

Love the art, can't be bothered with the books. We like to see them in the flesh, though - post-impressionism at the RA, Rembrandts at the Rijksmuseum, Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo at the Louvre, the van Goghs at the Musee d'Orsay and, in a couple of weeks' time: David, and The Birth of Venus in Florence. As well as some tower in Pisa that I'm going to photograph from such an angle as to make it look straight.

One day I hope someone will do the same for me smile

But don't stop, Jim - I enjoy reading about your acquisitions.

In addition to finally getting around to having an art book collection, actually visiting museums with these works has been a rewarding experience. El Museo Prado, La Sofia Reina, Museu Picasso, Neue--as opposed to Neuer--Galerie, MoMA, Guggenheim, The Leopold, those French ones you mention wink and on a different but no less exhilarating note, the good ol' Victoria & Albert in Old Blighty. All have been memorable and did I happen to mention my weakness for museum book shops? I'm like the typical FSMer at a Star Wars convention at those places. wink

Do you go dressed as Vincent, or Toulouse-Lautrec, then? You'd need a stick-on beard now, obviously.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't most any image in an artbook just a mouse click away?

Don't get me wrong, I love books and would much rather look at a book than a monitor screen, but those really nice coffee table artbooks can be pretty pricey.

You're mistaken, Old Sport. I meant in the "Star Wars is the greatest thing of all time because it was foisted on me in childhood" sort of way. wink

If I did go as Toulouse-Latrec, I'd be the first 6'2" fellow to try that.

Ever have a look at those HUGE Taschen ads books? There was a volume for each decade from the '20 to the '70s, I believe.

As for those who steer clear of art books--meaning 99% of all FSMers--I feel the same way about film score cds. It's so much cheaper to get the dvd instead of forking over that extra dough just to line the pockets of those wicked musicians unions. wink

Reminds me of the work of Alberto Vargas.

I have longed for an art book of the work of Donald Roller Wilson. I saw his stuff at a gallery in SF and could just sit for hours staring at it. (Sorta like the internet!) smile

I just found this between the sidewalk and the curb!

This ranks 2nd only to my other curbside find: the Dracula cd on Varese.

Really? I am officially coming out of garbage-picking retirement.

I wonder if these great garbage hauls of yours are coming from the trash of deceased FSMers. These guys--and they're always guys--have no one to leave this stuff behind to, like our late and very-much missed Ron Hardcastle, and libraries exemplify the "beggars being choosers" concept. Sadly, these prized collections wind up in the trash.
