I've heard that some adults "trick", and for their "Johns" it appears to be a treat.....so it's not just for kids! smile

I shall re-phrase my contempt for this practice.

It's quite cute seeing the younger kids - up to, say, 10 years old - dressed up in mainly home-made costumes with a bit of make up, looking both proud and self-conscious, and their faces lighting up when they see the little sweets that will be doled out by their parents (who are of course accompanying them to houses that they know will be receptive).

Outside of that, "trick or treat" is corporately-backed begging with menaces. At worst, it's gangs of marauding teens banging on pensioners' doors.

And yes, the costumes and masks etc have been available in the supermarkets for a couple of weeks already. And there's Christmas stuff in there now as well. Don't even get me started on that smile

Duh, embarrassed now. I did think about The Wild Bunch and that quote, "If they move..kill em."
However, I totally forgot that Bo Hopkins was in that movie. I just thought about William and Ernest and Jerry Fielding. wink

I shall re-phrase my contempt for Tall Guy:

Another ugly smackdown from the Scrooge with the intellectual shortcomings who calls himself Tall Guy. First he imposes the f bomb over Patrick Stewart's image, misrepresenting the actor and the character the actor plays, as well as injecting vulgarity into the thread, and now this. Tall Guy thinks Film Score Monthly forum is a garbage can for him to throw cuss words into and express his countless hatreds. What a relentless bore. Just once I wish Tall Guy would clean up his language and his dirty ugly vile little mind or get lost. What a miscreant.

When "PEEPS" started coming out for ALL the celebratory days, not just Easter, I KNEW the world's innocence was coming to an end.

I've seen marshmallow Peeps of ghosts and pumpkins for Hallowe'en. I suppose bats and spiders and witches are next.

I've always thought the Hallowe'en sequence with Margaret O'Brien in the Judy Garland starring 1944 film, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, had a wonderful distillation of the elements which once made Hallowe'en delightful for children of several generations ago.

Oops!
Errr Richard, TG didn't F-BOMB the thread with the Pickard image, Josh did.
I would check ALL facts before hurling insults if I were you!

It's a meme from 9GAG, Richard.

Don't go there. You'll hate it.

So what? Everybody already knows Josh is a "relentless bore" and a "miscreant". I think Holly called him on that last Halloween!
Or was it 'boor'?
Checked with Holly, she says 'both are correct'.

To be honest, I hope Richard meant "boor" rather than "bore". I'd HATE to be the latter.

I agree with Tall Guy. Halloween is my least favorite holiday. Pointless money-making scam.

Give me Bonfire Night any time. Cold, dark, crisp nights. Roaring bonfires to gather around. Community spirit. Rosy-cheeked children. Good food and warming drinks. Beautiful firework displays. And at the end of it all we burn an effigy of the man who tried to blow up Parliament in 1605. What's not to love?

I've never tricked or treated in my life, but then again we've never celebrated Halloween in Norway (although there are wannabe-US segments in the population who have started to arrange costume parties over the last few years).

However, when I was a kid we did something similar in the time between Christmas and New Year's. It's a tradition called "Julebukk" in Norwegian (literally translated as 'Christmas Ram'), and it's mostly for kids and families when they go around from house to house to sing a carol -- dressed up as Santa or some such thing -- after which they receive a treat.

I think that's the closest we have to your Halloween tradition.

Of course, I wouldn't even DREAM of doing this as an adult. That's just creepy.

A bonkers 'celebration' if ever there was one. Fawkes wasn't even the leader of the plot, he just happened to be the one caught and subsequently tortured. Then followed 250 years of further Catholic repression. The English and their quirks...
