I agree with LeHah and MikeP on thestat.

Here is one of his statements on a topic that was locked. "Tyler is a terrible composer. He needs to get a haircut and a kick in the balls for being a bit of a twat!" He said other horrible things about Tyler when all he had to say was that he didn't care for Tyler's scores. Of course, he always had to add politics to his statements, and he was warned many times about politics.

We all have scores that we don't care for, but I don't see us spewing vitriolic bile nor denigrating a composer because we didn't like some scores. There has to be some kind of discourse boundaries IMHO.

I am not familiar with this poster, obviously much of that is sufficiently off color to be a problem.

I read that there is a brief nod towards the Goldsmith score at some point, is this on the album and does anyone have a timecode for it?

Chaos, Mayhem, Destruction - 2:40-2:48

Chronological tracks order:
Theme suites:

01. The Mummy
05. Egypt's Next Great Queen
02. The Secret of the Mummy
03. Nick's Theme
04. Prodigium
08. A Sense of Adventure
07. The Call of the Ancients

Does this mark the first time Brian Tyler has done and/or released theme suites for a project?

No, but it's the first time he has this many. End Titles Suite is mix of shortened suites:
The Mummy
Egypt's Next Great Queen
The Secret of the Mummy (part 1)
Nick's Theme v1 and v2 (aka A Sense of Adventure)
Prodigium
The Secret of the Mummy (part 2)

The Call of the Ancients also could serve as the alternate ending. It starts and ends on the same note(s) as "Between Life and Death".

I am really trying to like this and read Southall's review, with whom I occasionally agree - I was a huge BT fan back in the Bubba Hotep and Children of Dune days. But no, no man no. Chaotic nonsense. Badly recorded. Theme is just terrible. This is the same interchangeable score as he did for aliens, predators, vin diesels, mummies. Time to put an end to it. Brian Tyler is a scourge on film music. Shameful.

As has been noted elsewhere, he is just doing what he's asked to do. If Hollywood asked him for creative and fresh music I strongly suspect he would supply it. Go listen to the sound samples for Columbus Circle on iTunes. Even if you don't care for it, it's at least a little different from the usual, right?

But instead Hollywood asks him for fun but empty "popcorn scores" to accompany popcorn movies...yes in the past Poledouris or Goldsmith would have written something much better for similar schlock, but that's not the environment of big budget Hollywood film music today. 99% of everything is "safe" -- ie. bland and generic. In that environment, Tyler's scores stand out as better than some.

Thank you for the refresher on why I have you and your smarmy photo blocked. Good god.

I'm a big Tyler fan & am enjoying this score immensely, however I do very much prefer the Chronological play of the tracks myself.

To each their own. I saw the movie opening weekend. For what it is meant to be (a popcorn flick) I enjoyed it quit a bit. Not the best ever, but it could have been much worse. I liked it. I can also understand why Brian Tyler is proud of the score contribution he made. Good stuff.

Jeez, what a fun thread (#ObviousSarcasmIsObvious). I saw the movie this evening and liked it a great deal. Nowhere near the best popcorn movie of the summer, but a solid 3 stars. If you're looking for something substantial from any movie called "The Mummy" about Universal Monsters, then the problem isn't with the film. It's fun, fast paced, has some decent scares, great action, effects and laughs.

As for the score, I downloaded the iTunes deluxe edition a week ago and haven't stopped listening to it. I love this a hell of a lot. It's got some great themes, driving action and some interesting smaller cues ("Inquest" for one - which isn't on the CD version). Fabulous listen all around. I wouldn't for a second peg this as a Remote Control or Zimmeresque score.

Sometimes I feel like people here don't really enjoy film scores as a whole, just the "glory days" of when they first got interested in them. "Ehhhh! Why can't they all be like Spartacus? Get off my lawn with your hair!" Remember in the 90's when practically every Goldsmith score got crapped on? I didn't understand that either....

Whatever. Great score. YMMV

I took my niece to see it over the weekend and enjoyed it. There were obviously a few plot holes - (like why on earth would they have left a pulley system in place that can easily pull the sarcophagus from the mercury simply by cutting one rope?) but I could forgive those things because the movie was well made, well acted and I was genuinely intrigued by the premise - especially the Jeckyll/Hyde stuff. Crowe was perfect for that in an Oliver Reed kinda way. I noticed the Black Lagoon hand in his lab, hopefully they pursue that in future films (if they aren't doomed). Some neat sequences and a few decent jumps that made my nice very squirmy. I was surprised to see a packed audience and even one guy applauding at the end. I will take this any day over a Michael Bay film or another Fast and Furious. And it did seem to have a restrained editing style which is refreshing for these types of films.

I liked the nods to Werewolf in London and Lifeforce as well. The score didn't really resonate with me but seemed to work fine in the picture.

I echo the solid three star assessment.

Great review ! I'm enjoying the heck out of the soundtrack, even if the deluxe edition kinda wears me out. It is great, rich orchestral adventure scoring , excellent action music and flavorful, mysterious music.

Loving the album. I may even spring for the physical CD.

I've made it through the deluxe edition a few times on Spotify and quite enjoy it. This is the best Brian Tyler score in years. It helps that it wasn't mixed like a rock album like some of his scores and you can actually hear the orchestra.

I agree. It's nice that this score actually sounds like Tyler is using a real orchestra with real instruments unlike a lot of modern film music these days where a great deal of effort is made to make a real orchestra sound like a $25 keyboard.
