I still prefer old "bad" special effects to the new digital ones.

They were definitely going for 17th century special effects, still has its charm. big grin

Anyone experience some pretty bad distortion in the strings of "The Trance" starting at 4:25 or so, and continuing until about 5:10?

Not a criticism of the release, just wondering if anyone else hears what I hear

how spacious this music is, not just in terms of tempo and orchestration (i don't even know if i'm using the right words for what i mean) but in terms of the instruments, the colors and shades being used simultaneously always seem to be at opposite ends of a spectrum, if that makes any sense, employing contrast more than most film scores do, or at least in a way i haven't picked up on before, i guess evoking the separation in time and backdrop that the film is built around.

i was a fan of the film, i was fourteen at the time and i remember renting it more than once, but this isn't a case of nostalgia, i'm only finding out now how much i dig the easy-breezy flow of the music, it's especially loose (not the right word but i give up) for a horror film, although i guess it's more of an adventure, and the emphasis is on the mystique of it all.

the first stand out release for me this year, and i did not expect it.

For me, the best thing about this release is the much improved sound.
I always found the original CD too long and my programme consisted of...

The Sentence
The Weather Vane
Nails
Salt Water Attack
The Salt Flats - tt - 32'00 mins

Having played through the expansion, my new programme is EXACTLY the same, but like I say, the new sound master is a fantastic improvement on the old CD.

One of Jerry's greatest skills was letting the music and the movie breathe, using either silence or more musically negative space in his score between his more extremely densely composed sections. A lot of composers, especially far less trained and experienced ones, treat scores as pop songs, with very little breath in the composition, and very little space for the movie itself. Despite Jerry being a master composer, and capable of remarkably forward, aggressive and intense composition, he knew that movie is "the thing".

I agree that Warlock, especially so gorgeously remastered, is a revelation, such depth, pace and musicality.

Loving this release! My only quibble is that there weren't "track-by-track" analysis; that seems to be a lost practice nowadays.

Intrada and LLL still do track-by-track sometimes; it's just not the rule as it became with FSM. I miss it too -- especially for Goldsmith scores!

Good Golsdmith, between Leviathan and ST V.
This improved sound release is really worth buying.

Finally received my copy. I was unfamiliar with this score am really enjoying it. It does feel like the last hurrah of '80s JG, but also as a bridge between scores like Lionheart and Total Recall, which isn't surprising given when it was written. The final two cues are outstanding.

Question for those that know the film. Does Salt Flats play mostly over the end credits or over the final scene?

Been a while since I've seen the film, so bear with me: The cue in the film begins when Redferne smashes the Warlock's skull, then he tells Kassandra (in a stumbling, flowery way) that there may have been a chance for them as a couple had they not been from different time periods. He seems to disappear in a whirlwind and there is a message left on his headstone (forget what it was, but it was lovely). Then, Kassandra sees the book. She buries it in the Salt Flats of Utah (it being established that the Warlock is harmed by salt) and drives off. Then, cut to credits. It plays better than I make it sound.

tl; dr Half and half.

Not having seen it since it came out, I just rented this from Netflix and you pretty much nailed it!

Wow, given the mainstream drivel that goes into theaters these days, WARLOCK seems such a clever, original, and comparatively literate minor masterpiece in retrospect! I really enjoyed it, not the least on account of Goldsmith's wonderful score....

Spotify notified me this morning that this album is now available to stream. I checked but couldn't find an accompanying lossless download. It is now available on Google Play and iTunes however.

This is one of the best-sounding Goldsmith scores ever.

Often so sparsely written so you can really relish each orchestral color, each crystalline synth in isolation or dancing around each other. It's kind of like you're listening to the music in outer space, if that makes sense...if you could hear music in outer space, the contrasting dead silence would make each and every sound come alive with that much more extraordinary clarity.

Gotta go, I'm late for my class Analogies for Beginners 101!

(anyway, thanks Intrada -- one helluva presentation)

Warlock got zapped from Intrada's stocks.

Soul doubt.

A wonderful, unique, underrated score. I hope everyone who wanted one got a copy. And if you didn't, perhaps it's still possible to do from other retailers for a short time...

What year will Yavar do a Goldsmith-Odyssey-podcast on Warlock? Year 2091?

More like it was left on Crait.

    That's right. TWO movie references.
