I also received my replacement disc (Jane Eyre) this week which plays fine.
What exactly was wrong with the first one?

I had a defective disc, as well, and Varese provided top-notch service and offered a replacement.

I looked at this set on on my desk tonight and finally realized it was a life long wish actually fulilled.

And yet there's so much more - all the TV and radio shows he composed for.

Last minute of last track sounded like it had an LP scratch; a repetitive loud thunking sound. I knew the recording should have sounded perfect (I have two other sources of the music). But there was no visual defect, and the track copied fine in a PC. Anyway, it was just my specific cd that had the problem.
Since that was cd #1, I felt compelled to play the other 13 discs ASAP to make sure there were no other issues. Turned into a drag to have to crank thru them just to make sure there were no anomalies.

There's an entry at Amazon for The Day the Earth Stood Still, available on CD-R and mp3, with a nearly identical tracklist from the Fox box, but the product details mention that it was released a year prior to the box and was issued by Red Bitch Music. Is this legitimate?

With a name like Red Bitch Music... do you really have to ask?

You beat me to it. Yah that record label seems a big fishy to me.

Sounds to me like they copied the 24k gold CD that came with The Day the Earth Stood Still limited edition Laserdisc box set that came out back in '95. I've got that one and it has the same 20 tracks which include the 2 studio session rehearsal and outtake tracks.

Unless it was named Blue Balls Tunes, I was willing to give it the benefit of the extreme doubt.

Okedoke, thanks much.

Thing is, this "label" also has a few FSM mp3 entries as well. Lukas may not be a happy camper about this.

Hows your box set holding along? I mean which album are you currently enjoying the most.

I have yet to finish listening to the set. SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO is just about wonderful.

Same here, and I haven't read a bit of the liner notes either!

Love the whole set. In fact, it's about time I spin 'em all again!

I love it of course, even though I had the previous Varese/Fox releases. I find myself returning to: JTCOTE and WWD the most.

Have listened to each score at least three times.

Jane Eyre, Five Fingers, King of the Khyber Rifles, The Egyptian (a surprisingly integral listening experience without Newman's cues) and The Snows of Kilimanjaro have gotten even more play.

Jane Eyre has ended up being my favorite, though I never would have predicted it going in.

Least favorite: Tender is the Night – even with some beautiful cues. IT'S THAT SONG – UGH!!!!!!!!

I still have the last 3 discs to listen to. Talk about nursing a listening experience...smile

I am getting down to the end of the listening stack from everything I grabbed at the tail of last year and the start of this year.

and that title song by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster was Oscar nominated.

But it still bothers me a lot.
