I guess people associate Kamen more with 80s action and movies like DIE HARD, LETHAL WEAPON or ROBIN HOOD. Those are the insant sellers. But a movie like BACK TO GAYA... One shouldn't underestimate the value of the pictures themself.
So this one's for pure Kamen fans only I guess...

I would agree, most people associate Michael Kamen with the blockbusters. What a great year this has turned out to be so far - 3 Michael Kamen releases in the same month!!!!!

I would say a big "K Amen" to more releases of Michael's works!!!

Only if you can't see past Michael's action score output. He's done some wonderful small dramatic scores. Good music is good music...doesn't matter what the film accompanying it is.
And anyway, if memory serves, the BACK TO GAYA music would sit quite happily with some of Michael's 'blockbuster' style scoring.

Thanks to this thread, I stuck this to an SAE order I'd been sitting on. The clips sound great and I'm really happy to see that some of the money for the album goes towards Kamen's Mr Holland's Opus Foundation.

We are proud to announce our release of the legendary Michael Kamen's original orchestral score from the German fantasy animation Back to Gaya on CD and online. The completion of the score was an extraordinary achievement as the composer tragically, in the midst of composing the music for the film, passed away. Committed to fulfil the vision of Kamen, complementing the music he had written specifically for Back to Gaya with a selection of his unused compositions from previous film projects, a team of composer and orchestrators headed by Kamens long-time associates Steve McLaughlin (producer/recording engineer) and Christopher Brooks (producer/music editor) finalized the score to fit the film perfectly. MovieScore Media's album features 62 minutes of grand orchestral, adventurous and highly entertaining Michael Kamen music performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra.

In honour of the late maestro, MovieScore Media will share a portion of revenues generated by the album with Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, which was founded by Michael Kamen in 1996 as his commitment to the future of music education.

First edition of the CD is limited to 1000 copies.

Just listened to the album. It's pretty much a Kamen score, for better or worse. First of all, it's got the Kamen sound through and through, which in itself is a wonderful thing, but when you combine it with the main theme it's just magic. That said, it's all too fleeting as the melody doesn't feature much into the body of the score, which is instead largely action material. This may be a plus to Kamen fans, but I've found most of Kamen's action material bombastic yet strangely nondescript and that seemed to be the case to me here too. The animation material I'm sure requires a lot of sudden changes in tone, and that's what we get with slight moments hinting at the main melody giving way to LOUD danger music. Of course come to the closing cues we get a nice reprise of all the more pleasant moments of the score so things do come to a satisfying close, but it's pretty much how I find a lot of Kamen scores, some fairly generic underscore with moments of great height. The most satisfying part though is that after years of wondering what the score sounded like I'm finally able to hear it for myself, so major kudos to MSM for making this release happen.

Today is the day that you can get your copy from SAE or iTunes. This is my review of the music which is a real treat when I thought there would be no more Kamen. What a nice CD!!!

I finally placed my order today along with Man to Man, Battle of Neverta (Tribute) and Winston Churchill Walking with Destiny. Going to be a lovely set of scores for sure when they arrive!

This release is such a breath of fresh air! Love the Hudson Hawk references
throughout. And that the main title was a trial run for the Robin Hood theme
is terrific. Thanks to all involved and thanks for bringing Kamen
back...

Listening to it now. Having lost Kamen so long ago, it's really wonderful to be hearing "new" music by him. A wonderful album, and tribute from all of the Maestro's devoted, hardworking friends.

In the past 48 hours I have listened to Hugo, Toy Story 3, The Artist, Road House, Renegades and Frantic and the score to Back to Gaya blows them all away! This is a fantastic score and should not be missed. If you love Kamen's scores to Robin Hood and 3 Musketeers you need to pick this baby up.
