An unexpected holy grail! Man, I love this score, and respect the hell out of Morton Gould's ability to score both the insanity of the holocaust and the humanity and resilience of the victims. It has so many iconic cuts: the relentless chaos of Kristellnacht. The slow lurching of Babi Yar that grows in intensity to a shattering climax with those devastating final two notes. The main theme, so simple and humane. And the magnificent "Warsaw Ghetto and Finale." Super pleased to see this being released. It's right up there with greats like Masada, North & South, and Roots. Absolutely purchased. -

Absolutely purchased. - A Few points about this release. 1.) It appears that the score was recorded in New York and after Mr. Gould left the project it was decided to drop most of his score to get a more Documentary flavor to the show, so there are a lot of pieces that never are heard in the final version of the show/ I think this is covered in Jon Burlingame's notes. 2.) Mr. Gould went to London to record the album and reworked and expanded a number of pieces for the album release. 3.) The Key art was the one used for the show itself and I for one always liked it because it captured the spirit of the show itself. 4.) The Original release of the LP always felt like it was part of the CLASSIC FILM SCORE series that RCA did, it's very nice to see this on CD at long last. 5.) If you have never seen this mini-series it's well worth seeking out, IMHO it's one of the greatest TV mini-series of all-time. IMHO of course. Ford A. Thaxton

Aside from the fact that it's a very high quality motion picture, beautifully realised and acted, the cultural significance of Holocaust cannot be stressed enough. Here in Europe, especially in former fascist countries like Germany or indeed my own (Italy) the word holocaust was not known, and the whole thing was sort of removed, some historical accident that yes, , was in the schoolbooks, but wasn't really "alive" in people's consciences. Us kids barely knew anything at all. The mini-series was a shock for everybody, and especially for Germans, some friends there told me that before it nobody ever talked about it, the series put it on the map, and that all the debate about the Nazi crimes was basically started by it. Of course in the US you must have had a different experience, with such a big Jewish population, many of which Holocaust survivors themselves.

Interesting, Ford. I had no idea that the album was a unique new recording...this means that the film recording made in New York is not only unreleased, but also mostly unheard, since so much of it wasn't used in the miniseries itself. I wonder if those tapes could ever be uncovered and put out, some day... Yavar

Oh, I'm definitely getting it. But you brought up the other recording, so I had to express how intrigued I was. Yavar

Of course in the US you must have had a different experience, with such a big Jewish population, many of which Holocaust survivors themselves. I think it was somewhat similar here. The very term "Holocaust" wasn't widely used in connection with the event until this miniseries aired. It was definitely a HUGE cultural moment in the US as well. There had been other popular films before which touched on the topic, like Diary of Anne Frank, Exodus, Judgment at Nuremberg, The Odessa File and Marathon Man, as well as arthouse films like The Pawnbroker, but this miniseries was transformative in the way Americans looked at the organized murder of the Jews. Indeed, simply giving the entire process a widely understood name was vitally important.

Sony provided us excellent sources to work from and we are sure you will agree that Holocaust sounds magnificent. Probably a poor choice of words to describe the score. James As the writer of that sentence, forgive me, but I don't get what the issue is. We were provided excellent sources from Sony. I stated a fact I thought fans of the music would care about. Sometimes I feel like people just want to criticize and it saddens me. Well, personally, I think it was poorly phrased. You could have easily have written, "Sony provided us excellent sources to work from and we are sure you will agree that the score sounds magnificent." This way the sentence doesn't carry the wrong connotation. James Notefornote, some people like to post about why they love a score and why they can't wait to finally get it and all that good stuff. Others prefer to post only to correct others, mention something is missing from the release, criticize a post/collector or to simply put down others which in turn makes them feel superior. Would be great to hear positive and nice comments like, "great release notefornote, can't wait to pick this up, looking forward to more." But, those words aren't ever spoken unfortunately and the amount of wasted negative verbiage flows effortlessly from some people. Posting so much unhappiness shows just how much sadness is deep within ones soul. Very unfortunate. Now I'm going to post something useful now instead of posting stuff that brings nothing to this thread. I listened to this score today. I was not familiar with the miniseries and/or score at all. STUNNING work. The Inga track just made me weep. Gorgeous moving composition. To those on the fence or not familiar with this score/composer, please listen to the samples again. If you like them just a bit you will love the entire thing. Well done Notefornote. Listening to it now...
