THE POWER!

In a box filled to the brim with gold, THE POWER is the platinum. Wonderful, and at times, intoxicating stuff.

You are very easy to agree with! But I have so much I haven't even gotten to yet, such as King of Kings, All the Brothers Were Valiant...happily etc. !!!

So glad you've got this now WA! The Power is one of my favorite Rozsa scores (I'm a big sucker for the cimbalom) and probably my favorite thing on the entire Treasury set! (And that's saying something, because it's a wealth of great material.)

Just to remind you, the amazing detailed liner notes for the entire set are online here (greatly supplementing the essay in the physical booklet):

I haven't been posting as much because I've taken this weekend off from rehearsals and exploring the Treasury is my priority. There's just so much to love in there...and I don't feel like I waited too long. ANY time receiving something that great is a good time, right? wink

This was the first of RCA's Charles Gerhardt-conducted "Classic Film Scores" series of LPs/cassettes. In 1972, it caused a sensation among film score fans, who had never heard the selected score excerpts in such pristine sound, and recorded with such faithfulness to the original versions. Gerhardt had done some earlier film score recordings for a Reader's Digest series of mail-order LPs, but they had not been nearly as widely distributed as was this recording, which had all of RCA's marketing might behind it. The album became a crossover hit on the classical charts, guaranteeing the continuation of the series.

After the various albums had their "first-runs" as part of RCA's top-of-the-line Red Seal label, they were shorn of their extensive liner notes and moved into the company's Gold Seal budget line of recordings. The cassette below may sport the "Red Seal" language on the cover, but the tape inside the box is clearly stamped "Gold Seal" and there are no liner notes. Sharp-eyed buyers needed to divine this by noticing the "Previously released" language on the cover and noting that this recording was now part of RCA's discounted "Best Buy Series."
