After the filmTHE STUNT MAN was completed, the filmmakers still did not have a distributor. Undaunted, they ran the film in one Seattle, WA, theater to receptive audiences for two months. It was also shown at Seattle and Dallas, TX, film festivals. Then, executive producer Melvin Simon’s company booked the movie in a Westwood, CA, theater for its 22 August 1980 Los Angeles opening. On 3 September 1980, it was announced that Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corp. would handle domestic distribution. The film won the Montreal Film Festival’s Grand Prize on the same day it acquired distribution. Fox also released Dominic Frontiere's score on its 20th Century Fox record label. Frontiere won a Golden Globe award for his score. Intrada re-issued the Fox LP on CD in 2008.
