Maybe they'll do a companion release of the John Williams material with the Michael Giacchono material edited out?

...The cut-off at the end of “Today of All Days” rankles me every time, though.

Same here. If there is ever an official expanded release with that cue complete, it's going to feel odd but so satisfying not having it cut off... big grin

I'm assuming that this was a problem just with the file uploaded to the FYC site. It remains to be seen whether this glitch is also present in the FYC discs which are only now starting to circulate.

In seeing the movie a second time, appears there's still quite a bit of material we don't have, including the big moment when the two Star Destroyers slam together. Also seems to me that the reprise of Williams' original end credits finale at least was rerecorded for the score as the tempo is a bit different and it ends with a little string sustain and harp on Jenn's theme.
Tons of stuff I love in this score--right now my favorite moments are the crazy, busy string pieces at the beginning of "Project Star-Dust" and especially the opening of "We Have To Press the Attack" which is just tremendous space dogfight music. And yes, I also threw this score into a big playlist of all the big space action scenes from the previous SW scores and it fits in quite well.

Isn't that what's referred to as the Stormtrooper motif from ANH? It plays a lot during the Death Star scenes where Han and co are being chased around the corridors after the garbage disposal setpiece.

It's also quoted briefly in ROTJ when the stormtroopers "capture" R2 and 3PO just before the ewoks surprise attack.

From Williams' liner notes for Star Wars:
"Darth Vader's Theme: Long ago, Darth Vader betrayed Ben Kenobi and the Jedi Knights. Now Vader represents the bad side of the Force. For his theme, l use a lot of bassoons and muted trombones and other sorts of low sounds."

One of the best quotes of this theme are when Leia is confronted by Vader the first time. "Darth Vader. Only you could be so bold." It plays the rest of that scene until Vader says "There will be no one to stop us this time." and then we hear the Death Star motif over Vader's Star Destroyer.

Also plays when Luke asks "How did my father die?"

Like the Imperial March it does double duty as Vader's theme and an Imperial theme. It gets used a bit during The Last Battle. I never noticed before, but only the first few notes are played for the Stormtroopers when they burn through the door of the Blockade Runner. The first time it's played in full is when Threepio is going on about the Spice Mines of Kessel!

I love this theme.

I think the bit you're talking about in ROTJ is a variation on the Rebel theme. It sounds like the same arrangement that plays when the Blockade Runner is pulled into the Star Destroyer. (And no, I never noticed that before, thank you!) It does sound similar to the burst of brass that plays after Vader's (mostly music-less) entrance. Is that also played when Red Leader buys the space farm? Hmmm.

Not sure we're talking about the same bit of music. It sure sounds like the stormtrooper/imperial motif to me.

Definitely. There's also a fair amount of the "Hope" theme missing, particularly the wonderful quote when we first visit Yavin IV, as well as some of the Guardian of the Whills action music.

I also think that the Star Wars end title pieces were a new recording. It seems they were recorded in pieces for editing, as the edit back to music from Star Wars after the excerpt from “Guardians of the Whills Suite” is… not that great. I think the sustain is from the end of “Jyn Erso and Hope Suite,” though.

Love the score! Definitely can't listened to it without the FYC tracks included though. Needs expanded for sure!

We are going to see the film shortly - hopefully in IMAX - and am wondering about the score. I am tempted to buy it prior to seeing the film but am not sure if it might be worth a wait. I am getting mixed impressions here.

Not a huge Giacchino fan except for Ratatouille and Up.

At 4:09?

Compare with https://youtu.be/PeXSnEAst78?t=43 at 0:43. Might be a statement of the Imperial theme interwoven into the Rebel fanfare.

Played again (I think) for Red Leader:

For me the film was excellent on all levels. I certainly agree with other commentators about it being admitted to the canon of the original movies.

The score was interesting in the film but upon multiple listings it has surpassed itself in my estimation. If we could only have the FYC material in there as well. I don't know who does the orchestrations but it has really fleshed out this music.

I don't know who does the orchestrations but it has really fleshed out this music.

His main orchestrator has always been Tim Simonec. But Giacchino always writes out incredibly detailed sketches!

You can tell Giacchino's influence on the orchestrations because if you look at any of his sketches, you'll see "SHRILL!" and "THIS PART, USE A FULL BATTERY OF BRASS, BUT MAKE IT SOUND JUST LIKE MONO!" and "PLEASE NOTE: MUST SOUND BEST COMING OUT OF GRANDDAD GIA'S OLD PICKUP TRUCK!" and "MONO! MONO! MONO!" and "NO BASS!" and "STEREO (JUST KIDDING, ALL OF THIS WILL BE IN MONO!)" excitedly written all over the sheet music, every page of which is watermarked with his studio's logo, a old-timey radio microphone immersed in a metal bathtub.

Love the score! ...

Received the CD (and pre-ordered the double vinyl, since I love all SW merchandise) but honestly I don't find Giacchino's music as spectacular as all of you are saying. On the contrary...

One minute from Phantom Menace is superior to all 70 minutes of this Giacchino's "masterpiece".
My indecent proposal for next SW score is Jean-Claude Petit.

Oh yes, punny track titles are lovely: live and let jedi!

You are of course entitled to your opinion, but I find that most scores I end up liking don't reveal themselves to me at first listen...

I still only like one piece of music from The Phantom Menace--The Heroics of R2-D2. smile

He's right (about his own opinion)!

"This, and the unavoidable fact that Sony will surely release yet another "Ultimate" edition of this score when Episode Two hits screens, or when the Star Wars DVDs are released, or when George Lucas faces his next IRS audit, should placate fans at least a little."

Orrrrr not. Is the Ultimate Phantom Menace the last expanded Star Wars score we've gotten? *shudder*

And I don't think George Lucas would get any money from such a project; he doesn't own any of Lucasfilm anymore.
