I'm champing at the bit to order this but...this period, these weeks before BF, usually prove to be a frustrating time to be buying things. I get burned every year.

Does Varese have any kind of history of holiday sales or promotions? Not that precedent would really matter because there is always a first time for everything. But I figure I might as well ask.

Wonderful interview with M.M., clarifies all questions about the sources used for the album:

That was a great listen; makes me even more keen to receive my copy! Come on, Royal Mail!!

This is an absolutely fantastic interview. It's amazing to hear the sleuthing work behind tracking down the stereo masters. We all owe MM much gratitude and thanks for what he did to locate this music and other releases like it.

My copy has arrived in the UK - very good service from Varese... but attracted a hefty customs and Royal Mail surcharge of £14.20 so the whole thing cost me just over £48!! Ouch!

I've never been stung by customs before so this is somewhat annoying. I guess they are tightening up on things but I see no other way of obtaining it (unless at an even higher price) anywhere else.

Where do other UK buyers get their stuff from nowadays? Or are we now going to have to get used to paying these higher prices for stuff we can't get in the UK anyway?

I’ve also just had the dreaded customs fee card through the door too, with a £14.20 charge. First time I’ve ever been stung by customs for a soundtrack. Obviously ordering a title as long hoped for as Dracula was, it’s still well worth the outlay ultimately, but this will regrettably have to be the first and last time I ever order directly from Varese. Just too expensive if one lives in the UK.

I have to agree with several other UK posters regarding the infernal customs charge. Mine was actually £18.38! Greater than anyone else's so far ... but then there is Poledouris' On Deadly Ground in the package too.

I love the material that Varese has put out but this, too, will be the last time I order directly from them. Anyway, the wife is collecting this long-awaited box of Holy Grails from the post office ... so I may even forego my after-work whisky to get home to the Count, courtesy of maestro Williams, all the quicker!

Cheers

Chris

Me too - including an £8 handling charge! Presumably this is to reflect that they have to separate it from the rest of the parcels, put it to one side and write a card to go through the door. Which is ironic, given the number of times the same people haven't even made an attempt to deliver many parcels in past years, not even knocking on the door but leaving a card saying nobody was in when they tried to deliver them. We know because we've been in at the time...

And because I had to be on a London-bound train at 6.40am, I can't even pick it up until tomorrow.

Are you in Ontario? How fast did your arrive?

Sorry, no, Colorado USA. Mine came fast, last week. Seems like it's quite variable even in the States, based on some comments here.

Nothing today (in the UK), so probably tomorrow, only I won't be here, so I'll find out next Wednesday or Thursday. I don't think there's anyway around the payments these days, things seems to have tightened up & I can't expect a small company to risk a fine just to save me a few bob. I checked the German site Chris Soundtrack Corner, I've used them a fair bit & never any problems, but with postage, the Dracula set is around £48, so if I am saving something it'll be just a pound or so. But I can't complain, nearly all of my soundtrack collection was bought when the exchange rate was very good & postage was cheap, & I hardly buy anything these days, so it doesn't really matter (The Vikings & Dracula so far this year), but as I've said before, the casual purchase is a thing of the past.

Sorry to ask a silly question, but why don't the UK collectors make use of Backtrack Records to purchase, their service is excellent and I'm sure it would work out much cheaper (and with less hassle) than direct importing.

Thanks, I didn't know they were still going. I'll certainly check them next time (but I can't see Dracula on the list).

I've used Chris many times before and may have to go back to him in future. It was still too much to pay from him but then I guess he has to cover his own import fees and it still ended up costing me that with the additional charges! As others have said, I won't be ordering from Varese direct again. Screen Archives are similarly unfriendly when shipping to the UK. The only alternative is to wait for the scalpers to list it on eBay... no thanks.
That said, the package is so superb and there isn't much one can do about it.. that sweetens the blow somewhat.

Actually their prices aren't much cheaper judging by similar titles currently on offer. I guess the problem with the limited edition market is you are going to have to pay through the nose anyway if you want to get a copy. Standard issues CDs are easily available via amazon etc. at much more realistic prices. Every UK retailer and private customer presumably has to now incur import/customs fees. Sometimes things slip through but I guess they have tightened up. You can buy from amazon.com but even they will add on fees up front to cover the costs of importing.

No way round it any more I guess.

I just talked to fedex and they never even received the package despite it being “shipped” on the 7th.

Hmph.

I emailed Varese. Hope to hear back soon.

Edit - so, someone seriously screwed up. Varèse says they shipped the package yet fedex says they never received it. There was a shipping label created but the item was never physically handed to Fedex.

I need the Varese shipping department to actually call and speak with fedex cuz there’s s serious disconnect going on here.

God knows what Royal Mail are doing with mine. Tracking says it arrived at Heathrow on the 10th. That's 5 days ago. I'm less than an hour away, about 35 miles, and I haven't got the "go pick it up from your local depot and pay your charge" card yet. My local depot is in the same road where I work. Jeesh.

Too expensive. I find that Chris's Soundtrack Corner, ArkSquare and Music Box are the best options for UK buyers.

I almost always order Varese releases through Intrada. They're reliable and the points are handy. Mine still hasn't shipped though.

I’m definitely doing that next time. Those points are very handy too.

I wonder how often a simple mistake like not fully checking a box because you think it contains the same thing you picked up a few times. And that somebody can check out tapes and not even give a name or place -- I hope that doesn't happen anymore!
