I expected something more purely orchestral from the cover.

You expected something more orchestral by just looking at the cover art?

I really wanted not to like this score, since my wish list is currently--correction: always--much deeper than my pocketbook, but oh man, those samples just won me over. Love love LOVE those synths and drum machines. David Newman's scores are really hit-or-miss with me, and this one's definitely a hit. Woo hoo!

Same here, just when you thought you were out, the samples pull you right back in

To me nothing screams big orchestral fun like military action movies. Sadly, David Newman thought it was a good idea to bury the orchestra with synth and cheap sounding drums. Even when I first started collecting, the presence of synth and drum machines was enough for me to skip a score. Don't ask me why they drive me nuts. I wish I knew.

But not ALL military action movies has purely orchestral scores.

This right here! I couldn't agree more. One of the main reasons I felt that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was a lousy soundtrack was because Williams failed to capture the sense of fun and adventure that all the characters were feeling throughout the movie. Come on! It's a war... why did Williams have to play everything so dour so much of the time? Zimmer really dropped the ball with THE THIN RED LINE that same year too. No wonder neither film won the Oscar. Come on, guys, yuk it up a little!

He, he....sarcasm for the win! smile

I'm so thankful that not every WW2 score sounds like THE GREAT ESCAPE or BATTLE OF BRITAIN or whatever. Nothing wrong with those scores, but versatility, man....VERSATILITY!

I read of a recent court case, about a cunning murderer who had tried to make a killing appear as a suicide.
After the murder, he cleverly put a CD of Saving Private Ryan in the victim's CD player, to make it seem the victim had suffered an overdose of depressing sounds.
The only reason he slipped up was because an expert witness testified that the CD player wasn't set on "Repeat Play", and that it takes two consecutive doses of that CD to generate the kind of massive depression that leads to suicidal thoughts in a listener.
The defendant was sentenced to 20 consecutive plays of The Thin Red Line.

This is really a score I should buy, no doubt about that. Maybe the synths don't have the elegancy of a Faltermeyer or a Levay, but it sounds fun nevertheless. Gates Of Hell sounded annoying, though.

I don't have a single David Newman score in my collection, he was never my kind of composer really.

Boy, we are living on different planets really. One of the most amazing action cues of the 90s "GATES OF HELL" sounds "annoying" to you?
And I find the electronic elements quite "elegant". Especially the lovely cues with the love theme. Electronic music doesn`t get much more elegant than that.

I am truly glad that tastes differ smile

Yes, Gates Of Hell sounded slightly annoying. I don't like noisy orchestral action music.

I think I can hear that Newman is not heavily into electronic music when I listen to these clips. It's not very well produced or integrated. But still somewhat charming, that's for sure.

IMO Newman`s action music isn`t just "noisy" but extremily well composed. And since it is supposed to underscore mayhem, fighting and action it is supposed to characterise some "chaotic circumstances". That`s why it might sound a bit more "noisy" than say "Dances with Wolves". Just listen to Jerry Goldsmith`s terribly "annoying" music that he composed for Poltergeist or Alien when hell boke loose. And at least IMO is Newman`s electronic stuff extremely well produced and integrated. Just listening to the track "War Games".
That`s just a wonderful integration of electronics and orchestra. Just perfect.

Do give HEATHERS a try (if you can find it). Delightful synth-pop score.

I'm sure anyone remotely interested will already know, but us Stiff-Assed Brits know this odd (but highly entertaining) film by the title Wings of the Apache.

Can't say I'm rushing for this one (though any David Newman release is a good David Newman release) - perhaps need to watch the film again to make up my mind...

This is an instant buy for me!
Any new Newman is a must-have and I remember enjoying this score, in the main.
I have most of his unreleased stuff as either tapes directly from him, or boots (he does seem to be a composer who happily made his promos available over the years, or someone from his team did), but I will always support any label willing to give his stuff a shot.

Also on my shopping list - decent score from a terrible movie (I'd stick with Blue Thunder or Airwolf).

My copy of this arrived today... sounds fantastic! I had had the boot for years, which sounded like it had been transferred to an audio cassette at some point before someone made audio files out of it. This new release is crystal clear and so much longer! I was never a big fan of this score (although I liked it), but this release is making me appreciate it anew.
