Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 241 Date: 1990 Tracks: 16 Time = 58:01 Exciting music! World premiere release of action-packed David Newman score for David Green helicopter action pic starring Nicolas Cage, Tommy Lee Jones, Sean Young. Playing out as Army version of TOP GUN, solid picture finds pilots of high tech helicopters going up against well-armed members of drug cartel in South America. Newman takes command with his score, propels it with military musical muscle courtesy large array of brass, percussion, then adds layer of high tech electronics on top. With patriotic angles covered, gently rhythmic love theme in tow, Newman creates exciting music with striking metallic edge! Highlights abound but spotlight deservedly goes to powerful 11-minute climactic battle cue "Gates Of Hell". Complete score available from crisp digital two-track stereo session mixes courtesy Touchstone Pictures. David Newman conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remains! http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.8032/.f 01. Main Title 6:04 02. First Flight 3:38 03. So much drum machine and other things that makes this the 90s equivalent of an 80s synth score. I expected something more purely orchestral from the cover. How about the orchestral main title, the 11 minute pure orchestral track GATES OF HELL and a couple of more 100% orchestral cues?

Ordered. Never saw the film or heard the score but the samples sold this guy. Now bring on Operation Dumbo Drop please! Yes please.

I'm hearing some leftover ideas from 'Heathers' (prob my favorite D. Newman score) mixed in with the driving orchestra and the synths. I'm sorely tempted.

Not many 80's or 90's material so far this year from Intrada, so this is a most welcomed release. Great action score, thanks Intrada!

You don`t hear the orchestra in the main title and the 11 minute (!) action cue GATES OF HELL ? Hmm.

Would not be a bad score, but the "then adds layer of high tech electronics on top" seem to be too loud over the good music. Sound like the want a Faltermeyer score. This will be forced OOP in a few months.

Don't forget Newman probably knew the sound mix was going to be one huge battle between rotor blades, engine noises, explosions and gunfire!! The last thing this film needed was dainty orchestral scoring. In comparison to something like Silvestri's DELTA FORCE, this is a much better choice and execution, in my opinion. I'd say he did a real good job, as usual.
