This might be of interest filmo this is Digit's Ebay site
http://www.ebay.it/itm/Peplum-Box-1-7-CD-BOX-OST-/290552564555?pt=CD&hash=item43a6484b4b

http://stores.ebay.it/OSTMANENT/CD-/_i.html?_fsub=8&_sid=135500549&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

I do own THE SIEGE OF SYRACUSE but have not listened to it enough to make a valid opinion of how I'd rank it there is no choral stuff on there as far as I can remember but there is quite a rich variety of music many tracks have a romantic flavour.

speaking of the ostmanent ebay store, let me recommend the 3-cd Italian Police box set
http://www.ebay.it/itm/Italian-police-box-OST-De-Angelis-Cipriani-Nicolai-/290653525845
at the bargain price of 16 euro, it's an essential purchase IMHO

sorry for the "slightly" off-topic digression

Thanks for your recommendations MMM have listened to and enjoyed the samples for Continente Perduto might add that one to a future order Saffo is another one I'd like to hear I'm warming more and more to Lavagnino as time goes on.
John Bender is a massive fan of Gorgo both the film and score do you have your own web site with your own titles.

thanks to all your reccomendations, i am getting THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII, THE NAKED MAJA, and ESTHER AND THE KING. i just want to know your opinions are of THE SIEGE OF SYRACUSE as i am seriously thinking of picking this one up also. does it have alot of great romantic and choral harmonies that will really capture the conflagrations of that peiod? thanks alot for any advice.

I had written something about the CD here:
http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=61618&forumID=1&archive=0

For me it is one of the best Lavagnino efforts within the Peplum genre. I am very glad that this score has been finally made available on CD because in former times we never had anything from it on sound carrier at all. The expansive main theme - almost in the vein of an epic Italian Max Steiner score - is gorgeous and highly romantic, one of the most beautiful things Lavagnino has ever written. He seems to have been particularly inspired at the time this movie was made. Yes, there is also some lovely choral stuff in the score which you will certainly like, particularly in the main title and the sensual variations in the love scenes. The passages with solo viola - an instrument which Lavagnino particularly loved for romantic scenes - are also delicious.
I must say that I myself even prefer this splendid score to Lavagnino's LAST DAYS OF POMPEJI. So yes, of course highly recommended.

L'ASSEIDO DI SYRACUSA and SAFFO VENERE DI LESBOS are both very good, with some lovely sections. (In English they are SIEGE OF SYRACUSE and THE WARRIOR EMPRESS.)

There was a response in a thread around here someplace, where a producer, as I recall, from one of the labels stated more peplums would be released this year, but he was not specific about titles. (Are they ever????)

There's another Peplum release coming soon from Digitmovies:

Marte, dio della guerra (aka The Son of Hercules vs. Venus, 1962)

More info: http://www.digitmovies.com/digitsoundtracks/en/products/CDDM214

I really enjoy Marinuzzi Jr.'s scores for ERCOLE ALLA CONQUISTA DI ATLANTIDE and TERRORE NELLO SPAZIO (both also released on CD by Digitmovies), so I'm looking forward to this.

Thanks for the heads-up, have preordered from SAE. I'm not very familiar with the composer, but VENUS was always my favorite Sons of Hercules film. Female lead Jackie Lane later changed her stage name to Jocelyn Lane.

As I mentioned in another thread, the latest addition. Nascimbene's "Le Baccanti" is one of the very best in the series. Wonderful music and very good sound. I'd call this a must-have without doubt.

The Warner Archive Collection has announced made-on-demand DVDs of six peplum films (actually four peplum and two related films). All of these films were released by MGM in the early 1960s. All of the DVDs are 16x9 widescreen and are remastered, which should be the best presentations these films have had on video. In addition, only one of the six has had a score release, so for the others, the only chance to hear their scores is within the films themselves. The titles are:

The Slave [Figlio Di Spartacus, Il] (1962) - Piero Umiliani / Digitmovies CDDM080 (49:22)

Damon and Pythias [Il Tiranno di Siracusa / Damone e Pitias] (1962) - Angelo Francesco Lavagnino / No release

Gold for the Caesars [L'Or des Césars] (1963) - Franco Mannino / No Release

Hercules, Samson, and Ulysses [Ercole Sfida Sansone] (1964) - Angelo Francesco Lavagnino / No release

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Tartars (1961) - Renzo Rossellini / No Release

Sandokan the Great (1963) - Giovanni Fusco / No Release

The Slave [Figlio Di Spartacus, Il] (1962) - Piero Umiliani / Digitmovies CDDM080 (49:22)

Actually, I had gotten a copy of this now-out-of-print CD and score is by Piero Piccioni (not Umiliani)

While I love the music of Piccioni overall, his FIGLIO DI SPARTACUS holds less interest to me than usual.

I'd rather recommend volume 22 of Digitmovies' peplum by Gino Marinuzzi Jr. - MARTE DIO DELLA GUERRA:

I doubt this one was ever distributed in the U.S. because the CD booklet features images of posters and lobby cards from only Italy, Mexico & Belgium.

According to the SoundtrackCollector website, Savina's first film score (ERODE IL GRANDE - 1958) has never been available in any format.

Anyone still interested in the SANDOKAN score by Fusco?
Just have a look at the new clues/posters on the Beat Facebok website and you will see that the SANDOKAN score from 1963 will quite obviously be released on a Beat Records CD in December. Great news!
