@ Jim Doherty- Thanks for putting in the effort. Do you have Bambi on cassette? I do, but don't have a handy way of playing it. I keep thinking that has the hunting dog music on it. But I could be mistaken.

@solium:

I will soon have the earlier Disneyland cassette release from the 1980s (as opposed to the cassette version of the later Walt Disney CD 60880) ; I just found it on ebay today. I'm pretty sure this will just replicate the WDL-4010 LP (like the late-'80s cassette of SNOW WHITE replicated the contents of WDL-4005), but at least it will sound cleaner than the LP copy I have.

I doubt that the hunting dog sequence will be there, but if it is, I'll be ecstatic. Which cassette did YOU have? The 1980s version or the 1990s version.

I no longer have the package just the cassette. It's white with a yellow sticker and pink markings. On the right it says:

Side 1
1203B
188

Closer inspection it has a cue on side 2 called, "Bambi Hunted". I don't see that on any other release looking on Amazon. Maybe I'm remembering correctly?!

Edit: Here's a pic of the package. As I thought it came on a cardboard backing with no plastic case or internal artwork.

Indeed a great score and worth for a rerecording in a proper stereo sound...
Jerry Goldsmith thought so as well I guess , when he wrote LEGENDS" Bumps and Hollows"smile

I would love to see a faithful re-recording of the entire score.

Seconded! And that would be great for many other classic Disney animated and true life adventure films!

As some additional fodder for the mix, Laser Disc collectors (like myself) who were Bambiphiles welcomed the
55th Anniversary CAV Release of BAMBI with an isolated Music & Effects track (Walt Disney 9505 CS).
Be careful! There were TWO different "55th Anniversary" Laser Disc releases. The CAV version is the one to get.
But then, how many of you still have a working Laser Disc player?

Check out the covers:

THIS IS THE ONE:

Someone may have already posted this link? There is a second part, I believe.

@solium: The picture you posted is like the cassette I just bought on ebay. If it follows the same pattern as the SNOW WHITE cassette released around the same time in similar cardboard packaging, it will just contain the contents of the original WDL-4010 LP. And, as I said above, "Bambi Hunted" on the WDL LP " is merely a different name for cues that are on the newest CD. ("There are differences between the track 'Bambi Hunted' on the old LP and the corresponding track on the Walt Disney CD, 'Man Returns' (track 14). Although the timings are the same for the LP and CD versions, the mixes are not. The CD features the music as heard in the film, while the LP offers alternate takes or mixes (I can't say which)."

See my post above for the details.

@ Jim Doherty - Thanks for the additional info. Guess my hopes for the hunting dog music is squashed once again.

More info.

If the CD track listings are correct, the old Disneyland LP and cassette incorrectly named "End of Winter" as "Wintry Winds."

At any rate, the "End of Winter" cue is quite a few seconds longer on the LP/cassette version than on the CD. The CD is missing several bars from the beginning of the cue.

Why Disney didn't grab those opening bars from the LP master when making the CD is anybody's guess.

Disney studios are known for impeccable filing and storage of their media. Why the different versions vary so much really makes no sense. Then there's the debacle with the Little Mermaid Legacy release.

More minutiae for those who might be interested. Aside from the aforementioned different LP/CD takes or mixes (who knows?), like:

"There are differences between the track "Bambi Hunted" on the old LP and the corresponding track on the Walt Disney CD, "Man Returns" (track 14). Although the timings are the same for the LP and CD versions, the mixes are not. The CD features the music as heard in the film, while the LP offers alternate takes or mixes (I can't say which).

On the CD, the first 1:23 of the track has a noticeable tympani beat throughout, while the LP version does NOT have that tympani. The second half of the track (from 1:24 to 2:05), while being the take used in the film, is missing a peculiar "sproing" effect (possibly executed on a steel guitar, like the opening of Warner Brothers cartoons, or a slide on a cello), which is quite noticeable on the LP version, but gone on the CD."

THERE ARE ALSO a few extra bars of the opening of "End of Winter" on the LP (although incorrectly named "Wintry Winds" on the LP) that do not appear on the CD.

Haunting and brilliant doesn't begin to describe this amazing score.

You're whetting my appetite smile

Unfortunately, laser discs were not as common in Europe as they were in the US - I've never seen a player in reality. The amount of material that has been made available on the format is incredible. I just think about all the MGM laser disks with hours and hours of session material. And now this. You really have to wonder why these things aren't included on their DVD counterparts. In the case of Disney it's even more shameful. They're putting out a "Legacy Edition" and make us spend our well-earned money again - and then fail to include various demos that have previously been available on earlier CD editions, LDs or DVDs.

@ RON BURBELLA:

Thank you so much about mentioning that BAMBI laserdisc with an isolated music and FX track. I picked one up on ebay for under $10.00. I just received it today. It's MUCH better than I expected.

1. As a huge RKO logo fan, I was thrilled to see that the laserdisc has the RKO opening that is missing from the 2-DVD Platinum Collection set I have from 2005, as well as my old VHS.

2. Although you mentioned there was a music and FX track, I don't believe that you mentioned that all the songs are presented MINUS the lyrics, so you just get the orchestral backing tracks! It's absolutely wonderful to hear some of the details of the orchestration that are obscured by the lyrics in the finished film.

3. Many sequences do not have sound effects, so it's almost like getting a music-only track. Of course, almost all of the background score is on the latest CD anyway... but still, it's really cool.

OMG, Jim, this would be AWESOME!!! I love hearing song arrangements alone (like on FSM's HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE http://filmscoremonthly.com/cds/detail.cfm/CDID/173/How-to-Marry-a-Millionaire/ )

I fired up my first-generation laserdisc play, just in case I stumble on a copy of a cheap CAV copy, and..... it went CLICK... CLICK... CLICK.

Dang.

I haven't seen this movie in at least 30 years. Maybe it's time to check it out from the library.

Incredible film both as entertainment and art, other than the cringe worthy "Twitterpated" stuff.

Ed Plumb continued on at Disney into at least the mid 50's; although generally relegated to scoring short subjects and orchestrating on the features. Paul Smith and Oliver Wallace generally got the features into the late 50's when George Bruns joined the club.

Until WW2 halted the construction of Fantasound units, Bambi was tentatively slated to be released using that multi-channel format. Wow! Wouldn't that have been great?
