We haven't heard Shawn Murphy's work yet. As I just explained a few posts above, the previous digital issues of the original albums Sony issued in 2016 were just cleaned up editions of the original analog LP masters from 77, 80, and 83. These new "reconstructions" (as the press release describes the new edition) aren't out until May 4th.

Hey, here's hoping that these discs are complete scores reconstructed with good sound and a proper mix… but I don't want to get my hopes up only to have them dashed. The truth is that the copy from Disney is really confusing, so we won't know until we see a track listing, and even then, this could be like the Concord Indy box set, which has additional material, but album edits as well. The problem with Star Wars scores is that they're just too damn popular, so the powers that be may not be too interested in catering to our niche while the regular albums are just fine for John Q. Public. I gotta say, those covers are godawful. I get that the soundtracks from the new movies are supposed to evoke the original 1977 double LP cover, which is dull but at least presentable. These are just freakin' awful. And they're touting the new artwork in the sales pitch… I guess they're trying to prove something about outward appearances being deceptive…? If these IS finally the editions we've been waiting for… well… I'll be happy.

5 bucks says that Disney releases the individual albums (in those awful digipaks) on 5/4...then co-releases 2-3 CD sets for each film with Intrada starting later this year...or beyond. If Disney plans to send someone in to the master tapes to reconstruct the original albums, it would be ridiculous to think they weren't also prepping expanded sets that everyone knows is a cash cash cow...even beyond our little circle. This is just the first wave of a deluge of re-re-rereleases. Followed by the forthcoming BluRay sets of the original unaltered trilogy...but that's for another thread.

Any chance someone could point me to a good overview of Murphy's 2LP ESB remastering? (Here or anywhere.) Thanks; the search box can't seem to find anything on FSM. I skipped earlier discussion when these were digital-only, and I'm really only interested in having the 2LP ESB on CD. However, when our beloved labels get a crack at it, I'll definitely fork over the funds! amen

I asked Shawn Murphy directly via Facebook about the mixes and responded with the following clarification: Shawn Murphy : These are new transfers from analog masters at 192/32 with edits matching the original soundtrack releases. These are the film mixes from the original sources, as best as can be obtained. Regards. ---------- So What he is saying that they abandoned the LP Vinyl (John Neal) mixes and went back to the original film mixes (of Erik Tomlinson) and used that to re-edit and reconstruct the OST Program. Murphy had done similar take on the Music Videos that was done for Revenge of the Sith set. Those were very accurate film mixes of such tracks such as the THE ASTEROID FIELD which was botched on the 2CD RCA/Sony Special Edition sets. I'm definitely excited by this. Even more reason to trust that more is coming. Gonna be an expensive year!

Sorry but I judge a book, sorry, a CD, by it's cover. It looks like an "el cheapo" project. And sorry, but the name of Shawn Murphy itself, I will quote the Princess, "isn't quite enough to get me excited". They didn't have time for anything else.

I've always wanted the album mix of The Magic Tree with the more prominent synthesizers on CD.
