It's common to underestimate subjectivity despite everyday evidence to the contrary (food, smell, touch can vary just to ourselves, so of course it will vary between people).
Very true, no doubt about that. Which is why I am always open to the fact that my perception is just that: my perception. Most of the time, what one perceives is mostly (and/or at least apparently) more or less identical with what everyone else perceives. But it becomes interesting when it differs. There is no one right or wrong who hears "Yanny" or "Laurel" either, it is just a matter of perception.
The bell at 1 second sounds cut-off and therefore unmusical. The home-made edit of it (at 4 seconds) sounds more like the bell that it is.
I see. Again, I find this interesting, because in those two clips, over my (non-hifi mono) headset here on my PC, sound very similar, at 1 second and at second 4, at 4 seconds less pronounced, but still basically the same instrumental sound. Maybe I am simply overhearing something.
I can't speak for Basil, but it's probably more about us under-hearing rather than you over-hearing. I hear "laurel" in the yanny/laurel video. I tried an online audio test which put my hearing max at 14 kHz. While dubious about the accuracy, it does explain why I couldn't hear a tone that I could see in a wave editor above that level. Depressing.
Call me under-critical, but I'm just pleased as punch that the '79 soundtrack album master from the UK gives us the original soundtrack album in better sound than ever before.
"To Scarborough", being one of the finest scherzos John Williams ever wrote, is superior in its album version, and I'm just thrilled to hear the tambourine properly. A superb piece of top-class action music.
I consider this score and its '79 album to be part of John Williams' "Ring of the Nibelung", when you include in the Superman score, the LSO-perfomed The Fury album, Jaws 2, and even some of 1941.
His wealth of themes, and the deft orchestrations (all, I'm supposing, from Herbert Spencer.) plus the knockout performances of all these scores, probably add up to the greatest run any Hollywood-based composer ever had, maybe excepting Herrmann in the '50s-early '60s.
I separate out the Star Wars scores, since they obviously form their own separate "Ring", and the fact that the Return of the Jedi score just isn't in the same class as the previously mentioned scores. Harsh judgment, I know, but there it is.
Surely someone besides me is still listening to this.
I can't get enough of the original album assembly. I would've paid the same price for that one alone. It's one of the all-time great soundtrack albums, IMHO.

It's also a matter of perception, age, and especially species. I recently used one of those hifi test CDs to adjust my stereo system correctly, and there was a frequency response test from very high to very low and from very low to very high. The very high sounds I could not hear, might as well have been silence, but I noticed that my dogs could definitely hear them. So at least I know everything is working and the system correctly reproduces very high frequencies. :-)
I am REALLY looking forward to grabbing this once I'm all caught up on my stolen collection. I've never even heard the original score by itself all the way through.

When you do get around to this, I can safely assure you you will not be disappointed.
Love this site. Still, the off-center Dracula will forever drive me crazy.
God help me I have rational thoughts on this:
1) His being in the center would overcrowd the image as a whole.
2) It makes more sense dramatically for him to appear as though he's nearing her neck rather than her cheek.
3) Similarly, he's an off-center character so it makes sense that he'd be off-center in the image. He doesn't come at you head on; he creeps up. Centering him is the same as foregrounding him and that doesn't make sense for the character.
Doesn't mean you have to like it but goddammit you have to respect it.
