On Wednesday, July 5, 2017, Onya Birri met in person, for the first time, Jim Phelps, at a location to be determined. This was the first time Onya Birri had met - in the flesh - a member of this esteemed community. It was, I believe, the second time for Mr. Phelps. For those of you who believe that film score fans are incapable of meeting girls, we were joined by not one, but TWO women - the lovely Ms. Birri and the lovely Ms. Phelps! Onya drank a Rum Barrel, a Jet Pilot, and a Black Magic. Ms. Birri enjoyed a Zombi, a Black Magic, and a Yeoman's Grog. Mr. Phelps had, at least, a Rum Barrel and a Black Magic. He may have a third drink, but I can't remember what. (Please chime in, Mr. Phelps.) Ms. Phelps had, at least, two Pina Coladas. The Phelpses also enjoyed appetizers, while the Birris were saving it up for Italian food afterwards. Our conversation touched on a number of salient topics, including the importance of Warner Brothers cartoons, Tikis, the Great American Songbook, paper towels and the dangers they pose to the environment, Maine Coon Cats, Tim Buckley, Mad Men, and 20th-century architecture. However, most of the conversation focused on John Williams' score to Star Wars and its profound influence on the careers of Alex North and Jerry Fielding. All in all, this was a highly enjoyable social outing by most 21st-century conventions of entertaining. Thanks to the success of this evening, I may be open to meeting more of you people. Thank you, Mr. and Ms. Phelps!

Heartwarming It probably wasn't as good as when we met up and I bet they didn't have a mariachi band like we did.

Heartwarming It probably wasn't as good as when we met up and I bet they didn't have a mariachi band like we did. No Mariachi, though there was an Asian gal who warbled (sub)standards while strumming the mandolin or eukele. We did mention in passing Jerry Fielding, Ennio Morricone, Alex North, Jerry Goldsmith, and perhaps most interestingly of all, Michel Legrand (and our respective favorite versions of "The Windmills of Your Mind"). However, those were fleeting moments and many other topics were covered. I did "name check"--in a positive, uplifting way--a handful of FSMers. We didn't get around to in-depth stuff (like Gabor Szabo, for instance), but there is always the next time--hopefully with added FSM types.
