I think so. It doesn't have all of my favorites, not even their '1' has them all, but 'Rubber Soul' is, I feel, the most satisfactory listen. It has to be because it has 'Norwegian Wood', right Thor?

I'll see your "Rubber Soul" and raise you "Please Please Me".
PPM had everything a rock and roll album should have: crackling energy, youthful awkwardness, teenage exuberance... just the right mixture of raw and polished.

"Rubber Soul" IS mighty good, though.
If any pop group had come out with RS and only RS, it would have been good enough for a whole career.

Dave, do you have a preference for The UK version or the USA version?

LOVE this as well, it's was tough. Your choice has 'Twist n' Shout' and 'Do You Want to Know a Secret'. You've got great taste! (too).

Thanks for the kind words, MD.
But hey, it's a thread about RS and I'm cool with that. smile

When you think that Lennon went from "Misery" to "In My Life" in the short space of just a few albums, it really is pretty remarkable. "In My Life" is a well-earned favorite. Everything about that song is just spot-on.

Yes. 'In My Life' is the clincher. Now that I'm old, listening to this song makes my eyes well-up! And I'm not in the least bit ashamed to admit it.

My dad insists this is their best as well, to which I always respond with Abbey Road.

I honestly cannot pick a favourite Beatles album, because they are all at various stages of their existence. No other band or artist has ever had the development of their series of recordings. Really. None.

But. Rubber Soul. LOVE IT!

My own favourite is Nowhere Man. Simply because I first heard it whilst watching the movie Yellow Submarine ON RELEASE! At my local 'flea pit'. The memories of that occasion (think I was 7) are so good I haven't the time.....

It really is all classic tracks. So it's easier to say the ones I think are at the bottom of the pile.

First: What Goes On. Dull. Just boring. Nothing to do with Ringo. I prefer his version of With A Little Help From MY Friends to ANYTHING after. Just find the song and production quite dull.

Of course there is then Run For Your Life. Great production and vocals from Lennon, but oh my, as someone who fights for the rights all the time for stuff to be left alone because it's of it's time, this does stretch anyone's limits. It's very comforting to know that Lennon himself regretted it.

But I really like the early version of "I'm Looking Through You".
The 1st take that's included on "Artifacts", without drums.

I don't know about it being the best (whatever that means), but it's probably my favourite. It has a nice vibe about it, & I can remember endlessly listening to the LP at a schoolmate's house way back in ye olden days.

...& I'd put, You Won't See Me in the great section.

I'm a Revolver man.

Same here. The Beatles circa '65-'66 (let's not forget HELP!) is the band at their most interesting and also a time when post-British Invasion pop was at its peak. Throw in the enormous influence of Bob Dylan and its pop music at its most creative and inspired.

Love 'em in all their phases. Don't forget they were making albums for less than ten years, and they had at least three different and distinctive phases. Anyone else and it would be three completely different bands. Just an amazing body of work, and I cannot seriously think of any album I don't like. Can't think of a favourite.

Love the early 60s stuff. Love the hippy era. Love the last bit where they were turning out different tracks. An album of contrasts is as good as an album where at least L&M were more together.

Similiar to remarks I've made about Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington, I prefer The Beatles in their 1962-1970 period, just as I prefer Frank's 1939-1994 era and Duke's 1924-74 era. big grin

Speaking of The Beatles, I have a huge soft spot for "Real Love." I'd heard it as a Lennon demo years before the final release, but I'd put it up there with their best even if the majority of Beatles fans wouldn't; I simply adore that song.

And yes, Please Please Me is a fabulous album. "Misery" is a favorite of mine.

Yeah.but....
never a big REVOLVER fan.

I.remember buying it when it came out. Hated it
I was too young to accept the radical departure from HELP and SOUL.

As an adult I. could appreciate it's excellence. But., it still isn't a favorite.

God, it was great.growing up WITH the music!

Rubber Soul (UK) is also my favorite! Abbey Road only slightly below. A great album the whole way through.

Me too.
It's a great song--you could tell even from just its demo form.
If that was really going to be their last word (which, of course, it wasn't--though we thought it was at the time), then it was a great note to go out on.

I prefer FREE AS A BIRD!

Great video too!
