"You think this is the real Quaid? It is!"
Total Recall (1990) [2-CD] (Expanded Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - Jerry Goldsmith

Paul Verhoeven's over the top, ultra-violent, sci-fi action adventure classic (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger during the peak of his movie career) was released in theaters 30 years ago today. I still remember watching the movie in theaters opening weekend, which was quite an experience as a child. It was a movie (just like Verhoeven's RoboCop ) I watched multiple times during my childhood. The movie itself is a fun roller-coaster ride. And Goldsmith's score perfectly reflects that. Total Recall is easily one of the best action scores of 90s and of all time. Unlike most action movie scores today Goldsmith's score always resonated with me as a very young viewer during each viewing of Total Recall. And it still does. Total Recall is arguably Goldsmith's best action score, imo.

@ Mr. lonzoe1: Nice anecdote. Also, very well put, Sir. Total Recall is an action/thriller score for the ages, a fractal score, bringing to light the complexity of the film as well as its subtext. Genius work from Mr. Goldsmith.

@ Mr. Jack: Mr. Goldsmith was on absolute fire in 1982, with NIMH being one of his most beautiful works. I wish he had scored Star Trek II. I'm convinced he would have come up with something spectacular.

I wouldn't want to be denied one of James Horner's key early works, but I still would have been interested to hear Goldsmith's take on it.

Agreed that NIMH is one of Goldsmith's best scores. I was crushed when Intrada couldn't find all of the missing cues, even if the one they did include on their reissue was the longest and "best".

@ Mr. Krakatoa: Fantastic Williams score. I just love the Intersection cue, with that feeling of these massive monstrous Martian machines coming to life, the music then morphing into a Stravinskian nightmare. Just wonderful stuff.
