Doctor Who starring Jon Pertwee - My Doctor, and my umpteenth trawl through his time and nearing the end now. Definitely the best era for me with little Jo-Jo Grant, and the UNIT mob headed by the wonderful Brigadier Lethbridge Stuart. When all else fails this period of this show always cheers me up.

Hick, it always amazed me that for a brigadier it was odd that he only ever had command of about 4 men (the same 4 men) and, at the most, 2 jeeps!

Bill, you're obviously too young to recall the cut-backs of the early 1970s ... smile

First two episodes of RESIDENT ALIEN.
It's a dark comedy mash up of Northern Exposure and Fargo crossed with a evil Starman vibe.
An alien, flying over earth to deliver a planet wipe out bomb to erase the danger of mankind to the universe, crash lands and is stranded in a remote Colorado town filled with the usual array of oddball characters, waiting to recover the bomb device lost in the snow.
He kills and assumes the body and identity of a local doctor living way out, but then has to step up and interact with the local populace when he is railroaded into taking on the town doctor role when the previous one dies.
I've always liked Alan Tudyk and he's perfect for this role.
It's not particularly great, but it ain't terrible either, which is a bonus.
It's got me intrigued so far, so I'll carry on with it.

I'm on episode 4 Kev. There's some decent laughs in it and I like the main guy, he really makes it worth watching. It's light good fun.

It's harsh isn't it? Feels like the writer was too in love with their idea, regardless of whether it made sense or was four hours too long. I'm really disappointed, as I usually like Wicker Man type stuff.

Yeah, light good fun just about sums it up, Ob.
I like him bickering and arguing with the little kid who can see his true form.
Ep 3 got a bit deeper with the the sad back story of the native American girl.
The bar girl flirting with the alien guy was funny too.

Just started MacMillan and Wife starring Rock Hudson and Susan Saint James .
Bought this box set in a charity shop about five years ago and saved it for a rainy day. Was interested to see that Jerry Fielding is the 'series composer '.

It's a Sin - HBO MAX

This is a first rate, absolute gem of a limited series that follows several young gay men and their friends and families, in 80's London during the AIDS crises. It's an amazing bundle of joy and heartbreak and is one of the best things I've seen dealing with the AIDS era, period. They somehow manage to put together a wonderful and engaging story following several British youths who become friends in the early 80's and what transpires over the next decade +. The acting and writing is superb and there are some astounding moments that will gut punch you in ways you may not expect. The show manages an amazing tightrope act of being buoyant but not silly, heartbreaking but not morbid and sobering but not overly preachy.

Truly one of the best limited series on HBO Max or anywhere for that matter. It stuck with me long after I finished it.

9/10

On season 2 of The Strain. Good, schlocky fun. I just wish they'd developed a more believable background to the political and policing response to the infected New York. Seemingly hordes of vampires killing everyone doesn't close the place up after dark and the government doesn't send troops in. It just lacks in that aspect of building a believable environment (And as i say it, they start to delve more into that aspect of the response). But the characters are decent and the back story to the old guy is entertaining and doesn't drag the pace down.

Just finished THE WIRE season 2.

It was excellent. I'd heard it was the weakest and most disappointing season, but i preferred it to the first. The docks location was really interesting and the various different baddies they have now ongoing, including the guys from season 1 have me interested where it will go. Quality.

The Strain also just gets more entertaining as it goes along. Good fun.

I love The Last Kingdom. Utred's accent gets on my wife's nerves in a very good, funny way.

Oh Hinterland was decent. But the main guy is so pathologically unhappy and sad, that it almost became funny for me. He has the WORST luck.

Ah, but what a team! Actually the regulars only amounted to two. But 'who's counting when we have quality? We have Sgt Benton and Capt Mike Yates. Ruddy marvelous. There were actually one or two others that made distinctive appearances, but that's essentially it.

And can I just say we did on occasions have the UNIT helicopter?

If we're going to worry about the size of the cast we're onto a downer. There's PLENTY to complain about. Making Star Wars on the budget of Coronation Street for starters.

But we won't go into that. We will simply say that in the UK Doctor Who was always the mainstay for any kid who loved sci fi. Always there, plowing on where other series, on the commercial side (looking at you Gerry Anderson) or Hollywood folded. There were always silly bits. But my, when the gems came they were better than bloody Star Wars anyday! And I am unanimous in that, as Mrs Slocombe used to say...

Yep, hubby and I are still watching The Last Kingdom. Really like it. Hinterland starting to get on my nerves a bit. He is constantly unhappy, and I think the mysteries drag on too long with some filler scenes. I'm taking a break for a few days.

The Witcher

One episode in, and it's a right load of mouldy old bollocks.

Henry Caville, who can be decent in things, lumbers himself with a tough guy gruff voice, and is as wooden as oak.

There's a battle early on between two armies, neither side is well established; who they are or why we should care. The tactics were Game of Thrones-style level moronic, infantry just running into cavalry. Axes and swords cut through plate mail, somehow.

The exposition dumps are long and boring. It's a plodding, unendearing mess (after 45 minutes). The music seems okay. Nudity included probably because it worked for Game of Thrones. Just waiting for the first pointless "cool" use of a C-word.

Lots of characters die in the first episode but we don't know them very well or at all, so it has less emotional impact than receiving a gas bill.

I'd give up on it now but my mate wants to watch it. I'd probably like the computer game because I liked Skyrim V.

Xebec, I had heard that this was a good series, so I watched the first episode and felt just like you did. I don't know that I want to give it another try.

WALKING DEAD Seasom 10.
We usually catch up one year late, since we watch the series on Amazon Prime.

I managed to get all way through The Witcher. Despite the shortcomings I think there's a reasonable series trying to get through. I DO though so agree with Cavil's voice. What are they thinkin? Corny as hell. If I was in charge I'd say to hell with continuity and start season 2 with a normal voice.

But the Toss A Coin To Your Witcher was such an earworm I ended up buying the great value (two disc) cd of the score which is quite good.

Anyway, we're enjoying kidnap drama Big Sky at the moment on Disney +. Not bad so far.

Oh, and just finished Invasion of the Dinosaurs last night in my Jon Pertwee Doctor Who rewatch. The very example of those stories even Who fans are embarrassed to be seen watching! Actually much of the filming on deserted London streets is great... and then the dinos show up. I have nothing more to say..lol.

Allen vs Farrow

I really don't know what to say other than, "Just damn".

I always thought the Soon Yi and Allen scandal was weird enough and heard what I wanted to hear about it. But this well done HBO docuseries pretty much cements Allen's reputation to forever to be known as a pederast.

The series is detailed and presents a myriad of never really discussed or sometimes never seen evidence, and then it shows what exactly we were seeing in his films as blatant window into what this guy was really into: sexually attracted to prepubescent and underage girls, in particular, his adopted daughter Dylan.

Yes, to put it out there, the series is pretty much one sided. Not even Allen gave interviews or his side of the story and for all intents and purposes, no one else did either. Having said that, there is a mountain of in your face evidence from court transcripts and some jaw dropping recorded phone calls between Woody and Mia.

There is so much that occurred that it's impossible to list here but the bottom line, what was once a truly idyllic family life that began n the 1980's was destroyed by a sledgehammer in the early 90's and nearly ruined a beautiful young girls life, not to mention careers and the family as a whole.

I challenge any Woody Allen film fam who makes it through all 4 episodes of to be ever able to watch any of his films again. The series lays out the evidence in meticulous fashion and while again it is one sided, it's flat out undeniable. And if you don't believe me, just listening to Dylan's interviews and testimonies is enough on its own.
