”This is my costume. I’m a homicidal maniac. They look just like everybody else”
The Addams Family (1991) [ Music From The Motion Picture] – Marc Shaiman

Barry Sonnenfeld’s adaptation of The Addams Family was released in theaters 30 years ago today. It’s very much in the vein of a Tim Burton movie. Ironically Burton was the original choice as director but couldn’t direct because the production coincided with Batman Returns. The iconic Addams family theme is rarely quoted in the score in favor of Shaiman’s own main theme, which is a lot more romantic and personal, for this iteration of the Addams and their bond. Fester is also given a mysterious theme that questions whether Fester is the actual Fester or an imposter. Gomez and Morticia were also given a romantic tango like theme. There’s also a secondary emotional Addams Family theme, which can be heard as the Addams are forced out of their home.

”It’s Turbo time!”
Jingle All The Way (Intrada Special Collection) – David Newman

Brian Levant’s silly Christmas comedy was released in theaters 25 years ago today. Newman perfectly depicts the chaos and shenanigans on screen of Arnold racing all over town competing with not only a crazy mail man (played by Sinbad) but also last minute shoppers on Christmas Eve for a Turbo Man action figure that his son (played by Jake “Young Anakin Skywalker” Lloyd) for Christmas. There’s also an emotional father and son theme that gives the score some heart beneath all the hysteria and absurdity on screen. Turbo Man is also given a catchy heroic theme, which Newman got to cut loose during the Wintertainment Parade climax.

”I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!”
Star Trek: First Contact (Complete Motion Picture Score) - Jerry Goldsmith

Also released 25 years ago today was the eighth installment of the Star Trek franchise, which is often proclaimed as one of the best Trek films among fans. This picture also marked Jonathan Frakes’ (Commander Riker himself) feature film directorial debut. Goldsmith came up with an emotional main theme that reflects the stakes of this mission as Picard and his crew must travel through time to stop the Borg from preventing Earth's first contact with alien lifeforms.

"If you've ever wondered where dreams come from, you look around... this is where they're made."
Hugo (Original Score) – Howard Shore

Martin Scorsese’s first family friendly film, which is based on Brian Selznick’s book The Invention Of Hugo Cabret, was released in theaters a decade ago today. Shore’s score perfectly establishes the Paris setting with the use of accordions and such. Hugo is the most whimsical score from the Scorsese/Shore collaborations. The melody for the Cœur Volant song also make’s great use of Shore’s main theme.

One instance where the OST won out over the expansion for me.
